Billy Turner’s ability to win football games over his lengthy coaching career isn’t his most stunning attribute, according to longtime Armwood coach Sean Callahan.
The way Turner has built and maintained his reputation as a highly respected individual is where Callahan believes Chamberlain’s longtime coach has made his mark.
“Not only is it amazing how many wins he has, it’s amazing how people view him,” Callahan said. “Everyone has respect for him and everyone likes him. He does a great job working with people. He’s an older gentleman, but he still does a great job communicating with kids and gets his message across. He’s got a lot of people through the years that he’s coached and worked with that have come back to help him, so he’s a quality person. He’s probably a better person than he is a coach. He’s that good.”
Callahan doesn’t have any tales of classic battles against Turner, because with the Hawks and Chiefs playing in different classifications throughout the years, there haven’t been any battles. Still, Callahan said he has been able to form a bit of a relationship with Turner through sharing information - on things like common opponents and offensive and defensive schemes - and that he has the utmost respect for Hillsborough County’s all-time winningest coach, who is going for career win No. 250 against Jefferson on Thursday.
