Berkeley Prep senior libero/setter Christina Theofilos has decided to play for Notre Dame.
The 5-foot-4 defensive specialist is a two-time Tribune all-county first-team selection and Class 3A all-state selection. She’s helped the Buccaneers, ranked in the Top 25 in both the ESPN Fab 50 and Century Club Top 100, reach the state final four the last three years and currently leads the team with 199 digs and 261 assists. As a junior, she led the county in digs with 593.
“It is definitely official that I have decided to play for Notre Dame in 2009,” Theofilos said via email Tuesday. “They called (Monday) night to get my uniform sizes and to suggest No. 1 (since 10 is already taken). I am really excited to play for such a great school with such an unbelievable tradition in sports and academics. When I visited the campus last spring I was blown away, but I really made my final decision based on the amazing coaching staff. When I met head coach Debbie Brown, I knew right away that I wanted to play for her. We spent the entire day together and she was like, “when I watch you play I feel like I’m watching myself”. She really complimented me on my leadership, intensity, and passion for volleyball and it meant a lot to me that she noticed so many little things about the way I play when she was scouting me.”
The Fighting Irish are 9-9 overall and 4-2 in the Big East.
“I have been watching Notre Dame volleyball this fall whenever it’s on TV and I am excited because I think I will be able to make an immediate impact on the team and help them with their serve-receive and defense,” Theofilos said.
