Coming off back-to-back losses, I’m guessing USF coach Jim Leavitt will take the first half against 20th-ranked West Virginia. The Bulls lead 20-12 behind a big first half from freshman quarterback B.J. Daniels.
Daniels rushed for 64 yards and passed for 193 in the first 30 minutes, accounting for 257 of USF’s 274 total yards. Daniels threw touchdown passes to Carlton Mitchell and A.J. Love.
Here are some first-half stats:
First Downs: WV 10, USF 9
Rushing yards: WV 70, USF 81
Passing yards: WV 101, USF 193
Total yards: WV 171, USF 274
Penalties: WV 2-16, USF 3-11
What stood out to me? I liked the call by Leavitt to go for it on fourth-and-1 at USF’s 49 on the Bulls’ first drive. Mo Plancher picked up the first down, and on the next play Daniels hit Carlton Mitchell for a 49-yard touchdown pass ... also, with West Virginia at USF’s 17 and 2-and-8 late in the second quarter, Bulls DEs Jason Pierre-Paul and George Selvie batted down consecutive passes, forcing a field goal ...
First-half notes:
*Selvie played in his 45th career game, tying the school mark held by three others
*Mitchell moved into fifth on the school’s all-time receiving list by catching three passes for 124 yards
