ARLINGTON, Texas—The Rays are keeping a close eye on the progress of Tropical Storm Fay and are hoping to play at least two of the three games scheduled against the Angels Monday-Wednesday.
Rays president Matt Silverman said today that Monday’s series opener is definitely on and it’s wait-and-see from there.
“If the storm maintains its current path, Tuesday would be in doubt, and then we’ll make a call on Wednesday based on Tuesday,” said Silverman. “We’re in communication with the league and with the Angels about it, and we’re hopeful we’re going to get the series in. Two out of three is the most likely case, but with the unpredictability of the storm, it’s pretty much a wait-and-see game.”
Silverman said a decision on Tuesday’s game should be made sometime Monday night, as opposed to Tuesday morning.
The Angels already are en route to Florida after playing at Cleveland this weekend, but Silverman said there’s a possibility they might relocate to Atlanta or Miami following Monday’s game so they don’t get stuck in St. Petersburg. They are scheduled to open a four-game series in Anaheim against the Twins on Thursday.
There is a possibility that the teams might play a doubleheader Wednesday if they can’t play Tuesday, but it seems more likely that they would play one game Wednesday, then reconvene on a mutual off day, Sept. 1, to finish out the series if necessary.
