Bloomingdale senior forward Callum Townsend, Hillsborough County’s leading scorer with 24.0 points per game, is out for the season.
Bloomingdale boys basketball coach Josh Chapin said Townsend, a 6-foot-6 Division I prospect, re-tore his ACL in a game against King last Wednesday. Townsend first tore the ligament in his right knee in spring of 2008, but after surgery and tireless rehab, was back on the court in five months.
In the game against King, Chapin said Townsend “came down on it” during the second quarter. Townsend sat the bench the remainder of the game with ice wrapped around his right knee. He finished with four points. He had a MRI on Friday.
“It’s been surreal the last couple of days,” Chapin said. “I’ve never been around a better person than him. His work ethic and personality, I can coach another 20 years and never have a kid like this again.”
Townsend was named to the Tribune’s All-Hillsborough County Boys Basketball team as a junior after leading the county with 27 points per game. He ends his prep career as Bloomingdale’s all-time leading scorer with 1,552 career points, making him No. 33 on the all-time scoring list in Hillsborough County.
Bloomingdale is currently 12-4.
