James Shields and Daisuke Matsuzaka continued to prove they were deserving Game 1 starters in the ALCS for the Rays and Red Sox, respectively, in the third inning at Tropicana Field.
Shields retired all three batters he faced, with Jason Varitek striking out before both Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia popped out.
Dice-K was almost as efficient, though he did issue his fourth walk when Carlos Pena earned a base-on-balls with two out after Aki Iwamura lined out to right field. Matsuzaka fanned Evan Longoria to end the inning.
