Plant coach Robert Weiner witnessed first hand what makes Billy Turner such a special coach in a profession filled with special coaches.
Several years ago, during voting for the All-Western Conference football team, coaches gathered to discuss the merits of their players and why they should be included on the team. Turner began a discussion about a talented Chamberlain player who had struggled with some off-field issues.
“I coached this kid in the All-Star Game and I let him know that his coach stood up for him, literally” Weiner said. “When Billy talks about his players, he literally gets out of his seat and stands up. He’s being symbolic that he’s going to stand up for his players.
“He always talks about everything in the context of kids being the most important thing. I think in that regard, for all the coaches in Hillsborough County, he’s been an inspiration. He’s a great lead for so many people to follow.”
As Turner closes in on his 250th victory, Weiner believes his legacy is his humble nature and love for the players.
“I think where it begins and ends with Billy is the word respect,” Weiner said. “I think that he garners so much respect and is afforded that unique place of respect by so many people, by kids, parents and colleagues because he’s so respectful of everyone. He never carries himself, I mean Billy Turner’s a legend, but you’d never know that by talking to him.”
