Although there is still a chance the Tampa Bay Rays could host a possible Game 6 of the American League Championship Series on Saturday at Tropicana Field, the Lightning will not be changing the start of their game against the Minnesota Wild.
There were some internal discussions about changing the start time to an early afternoon faceoff, and a change likely would have been made had Boston won Game 4 Tuesday night. But because there remains so much uncertainty as to whether the Rays will even play on Saturday, or even what time, Lightning officials will keep the game against the Wild as a 7:30 p.m start.
Here’s the issue, because the Rays lead the series 3-1 heading into Thursday’s Game 5, there is a chance there will be no Game 6 Saturday night. Obviously, that won’t be resolved until Thursday night. The other issue is that as I write this, the start time for a potential Game 6 is still up in the air. If there is a Game 7 in the NLCS, which at this point seems unlikely, then Game 6 of the Rays-Red Sox series would begin at 4:30 p.m.; if there is no Game 7 of the NLCS then the Rays play at 8 p.m.
With so much uncertainty, the team did not want to make a last-minute decisions and leave fans with tickets in limbo. So no change will be made.
Once Tampa Bay took a 3-1 lead in the series, the decion was made. Had Boston evened the series and guaranteed a Game 6 back at the Trop, the Lightning would have been dropping the puck in the early afternoon.
