Hillsborough County:

Point Guard Makes History at Private School

Ever heard of Faith Baptist Christian School? How about Rashard Williams, the school’s star point guard?

If your answer was no, join the club.

I was unaware of the school and Williams until Friday, when I showed up for Williams’ signing ceremony at the small institution in Brandon at the request of Pastor Gene Reynolds.

Williams, a 5-foot-10 point guard, signed a basketball scholarship with Tennessee Temple University, a NAIA program, making him the first athlete from the school to ink with a university. Born in the Bahamas, he moved to Florida last year and this past season, averaged 15 points and 10 assists per game while leading the varsity team to a 26-2 record and the Florida Christian Conference state title. He was also named FCC Player of the Year.

Thanks for alerting the media guys.

“What we like is he’s quick and he keeps the ball low,” said TTU men’s basketball coach Patrick O’Grady, who came from Chattanooga for the signing ceremony. “We think he has the possibility of being our starting point guard in the long term.”

Williams, who was a star player in the Bahamas, also received interest from St. Pete College and the University of Tampa.

“It’s a definite highlight for us,” boys varsity coach Gene Reynolds Jr. said. “He’s very deserving.”

Williams said he’s looking forward to attending a bigger school. About 500 students live on the TTU campus. Faith Baptist has an enrollement of a little over 100 students, K-12.

Hopefully he can handle the change.
