Package complete: USF hires Gilchrist’s trainer for $30,000

USF announced Tuesday night that Terrelle Woody has been hired as the team’s “video and conditioning assistant.”

The 38-year old Woody does not have a college degree and will be paid $30,000. For the past three seasons, the Tampa Tribune reported Saturday Woody has been the personal trainer, adviser and spokesman for Gus Gilchrist, a 6-foot-10 center, who signed with USF two months ago.

Woody will not receive benefits from the school, USF coach Stan Heath said. Woody was among about four other candidates for the job, Heath said.

Woody’s job duties include recording games of upcoming opponents, making sure the TV’s in the coaches offices are connected to DirectTV and assisting with a certified strength and conditioning coach with the conditioning of players.

“I’m excited to bring him on board,” Heath said. “He’s a great addition to the staff. He will mesh very well and help our program improve and get better.”

Although Gilchrist is only 18 years old, he already has attended two high schools and signed letter of intents with three universities – and each step he has been aligned with Woody, who had Gilchrist serve as his best man in his April wedding.

Heath said he paid Woody a total of $1,000 to work two camps this summer and allowed Woody to stay at his house – an offer he said he makes to all coaches who work at his summer basketball camps.

Heath and Woody both previously told The Tampa Tribune Woody would be a big asset in recruiting, but Heath said Woody could only recruit on campus.

“He’ll share information with me, advise me and my staff,” Heath said. “On campus [recruiting] is the most interaction [with recruits] he can have.”

Here is Woody’s job description as provided by USF:
