NYBC: Forest Hills downs Bullets in opener

Darren Miller homered twice and had five RBIs, and Jason Heinrich had a homer and six RBIs as Cal Ripken World Series champion Forest Hills defeated the AAU Champion Valrico Bullets 14-4 in Memphis, Tenn. in the National Youth Baseball Championships on Friday afternoon.

The NYBC tournament brings together the national champions from eight different youth baseball organizations, split into two groups of four. Last year in its inaugural competition, Orlando-based side Chet Lemon’s Juice won the under-12 title, with Tampa’s Jordan Parnell winning tournament MVP honors.

The Bullets took a 3-1 lead after the first inning, a pair of walks to lead off the inning by Doug Sandberg and Nick Green leading to runs, but from then on Forest Hills took control.

Miller hit a two-run homer to tie the game in the third inning, then Heinrich hit a three-run shot in the fourth inning to give Forest Hills the lead for good.

Miller hit his second homer of the game in the fifth, a three-run shot. Heinrich tacked on to the lead in the sixth, as he drove in another three runs on a bases-loaded double.

Miller also took the win, holding the Bullets scoreless in the third and fourth innings allowing only a walk.

Forest Hills plays again later on Friday, facing the National Amateur Baseball Federation champion Mississippi Lumberjacks at 9 p.m., while the Bullets will try to rebound against Dixie League champions Columbia County from Georgia at 6:30 p.m.
