Joe Maddon said he thought Jason Bartlett was intentionally hit by a Jim Johnson pitch in the eighth inning today.
“The last one was intentional,” Maddon said. “I really don’t know why they did it, but it was on purpose.
“To verify that, all of their extra players came out and sat on the rail before the ninth inning – guys we had not seen the entire series. [Melvin] Mora, [Adam] Jones – everybody that had been inside, they were out there expecting something to happen because of what they did.”
Jason Hammel retired the Orioles in order in the top of the ninth, so that wasn’t an issue.
Maddon was asked if he told his team not to retaliate.
“That’s always in-house,” he said. “I’m just disappointed that they chose to do that.”
As for Bartlett’s thoughts on the matter, there weren’t many.
“I don’t know,” he said when asked if he thought it was intentional. “I’m not even going to go into that. It happened, and to me, it’s the past.”
