Hillsborough County:

Locals Climbing Minor League Ranks

Three former Hillsborough County standouts are steadily climbing the minor league ranks.

Former Jesuit outfielder Shane Robinson, former Plant outfielder Corey Brown and former Hillsborough outfielder Michael Burgess each have recently earned promotions after claiming midseason all-star honors in their respective leagues.

Robinson, a fifth-round pick by St. Louis in 2006, recently was promoted to the Cardinals’ Triple-A affiliate in the Pacific Coast League, the Memphis Redbirds. The Collegiate National Player of the Year as a sophomore at Florida State in 2005, Robinson hit .352 with 17 doubles, 46 runs scored and 32 RBI in 63 games at Double-A Springfield of the Texas League before earning the promotion. Robinson is hitting .237 with four doubles, one home run and seven RBI through 28 games with the Memphis.

Brown, a supplemental first-round pick by Oakland in 2007, is now with the Stockton Ports, the Athletics’ Class A-Advanced affiliate in the California League. Brown started the season with Class A Kane County in the Midwest League and hit .270 with 18 doubles, 14 homers and 49 RBI in 85 games. He is hitting .268 with 13 homers and 29 RBI in 34 games with Stockton.

Burgess, a supplemental first-round pick by Washington in 2007, is now with the Potomac Nationals, the Nationals’ Class A-Advanced affiliate in the Carolina League. Burgess hit .249 with 26 doubles, 18 home runs and 60 RBI in 112 games with the Hagerstown Suns, Washington’s Class A affiliate in the South Atlantic League. Burgess is hitting .222 with two homers and six RBI through seven games with Potomac.

Two other former Hillsborough County standouts also earned mid-season all-star recognition in their respective leagues. Former Bloomingdale and Florida State infielder Tony Thomas was a Florida State League all-star with the Daytona Cubs, while former Brandon and Louisville infielder Chris Cates was a Midwest League all-star with the Beloit Snappers.

Thomas is still with Daytona, the Chicago Cubs’ affiliate in the Class A-Advanced Florida State League, and is hitting .260 with 27 doubles, seven home runs and 42 RBI in 103 games.

Cates is still with Beloit, the Minnesota Twins’ affiliate in the Class A Midwest League, and is hitting .244 with 10 doubles and 33 RBI in 108 games.
