Armwood 9, Plant 2: Blow By Blow

Both teams have run onto the field and Plant won the coin toss.

Check back here often for scoring and game updates.

FIRST QUARTER

8:25 Plant just finished it’s first possession of the game with an incomplete pass from Aaron Murray that Armwood safety Angelo Hadley nearly picked off. After completions to Allen Sampson and a third-down conversion pass to Orson Charles, Murray and company felt the extreme pressure of Armwood’s defense. On two consecutive plays, Armwood backed up Plant’s offense for negative yards. Sampson, who is playing in his first game since breaking his jaw, took a hard shot from Hawks linebacker Petey Smith.

4:49 Armwood’s offense ate up a good chunk of the first quarter with their first possession. Aided by three first down conversions, Hawks quarterback Mywan Jackson hit senior wideout Dykerius Cross. Jackson placed the ball right in the corner of the west end zone and Cross leapt up to catch it. A famous pair of eyes on that play was Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Warrick Dunn. Dunn’s hanging out just outside of that end zone.

1:20 Plant showed some gumption against the Hawks smothering defense. Faced with fourth-and-inches, Plant went for it and fullback Chris Hesson dove over a host of Armwood defenders for the first down. But then the Panthers shot themselves in the foot. A holding penalty backed them up 13 yards, a delay of game backed them up five more and they ended up punting when Murray ran - for his life seemingly - for no gain.

END OF FIRST QUARTER: ARMWOOD 7, PLANT 0

SECOND QUARTER

9:26 Armwood burned their third and final first half timeout after they failed to convert third-and-2. Faced with fourth-and-1, the Hawks went for it and Jackson converted it with a two-yard run. But Armwood was backed following back-to-back penalties. And Plant’s defense got a stop.

And then the Panthers took advantage of a fumbled snap on the punt and a tackle by Hunter Baldwin gave Plant the ball at the Hawks 24-yard line.

7:24 Plant nearly put some points on the board thanks in part to a personal foul/late hit penalty against Armwood and a fourth-and-1 conversion run by Marco Cobb. On third-and-goal from the Hawks 8-yard line, Murray connected with Charles, but Charles was pushed out of bounds. Murray got slammed to the ground on the play and limped off the field. Plant lined for a 25-yard field goal, but Armwood was penalized and the Panthers sent their offense back on the field. On fourth-and-goal from the 4-yard line, Murray was sacked when he got sandwiched between two Armwood defenders.

5:55 Plant’s defense just put the Panthers on the scoreboard. Armwood had backed itself up following two more penalites and then a bad snap went into the end zone for a safety. ARMWOOD 7, PLANT 2

:25 Plant dared the Hawks to blink and they did. Going for it on fourth-and-6, the Panthers drew Armwood offsides when Theodore “Man Man” Jackson jumped. Then Murray converted a third-and-9 when he connected with Sampson. Murray connected with DeAndre Queen for a first down and a late hit out of bounds on Murray gave the Panthers more yardage and set up first and goal. Murray hurt though. He limped back onto the field and fell to his knees, but got back up. Murray hit Justin Rudolph on fourth-and-goal but Rudolph was stopped at the 1-yard line. Armwood took over on downs.

END OF SECOND QUARTER ARMWOOD 7, PLANT 2

THIRD QUARTER

9:45 The second half is underway. Plant just kicked the ball into the end zone for a touchbackk. Armwood starts the third quarter on their own 20-yard line. Plant’s defense got another big stop, aided by linebacker Mike Mirabella’s tackle for a loss to set up third-and-7 which the Hawks did not convert. Hawks offensive coordinator Chris Taylor said the difference in the first half for Plant was the crowd noise. The Hawks offense is having trouble hearing the plays.

7:06 After Plant’s offense went three-and-out, the Panthers defense gave them another chance to take the lead when they forced Armwood’s offense to go three-and-out. Baldwin and defensive back Javonte Martin had big plays in this series. Petey Smith is not in the game right now. He is cramping up, but the Hawks defense is still stopping Plant’s offense and so are Panthers penalties. Plant had back-to-back penalties that backed them up to their own 27-yard line. Plant failed to convert the third down and were forced to punt. Ryne Giddins was shaken up on the last play of the series. He appears to be cramping up too. Giddins was helped off the field by Armwood coaches.

4:30 The Plant Panthers have a new identity - in this game anyway. The Panthers defense just forced the third three-and-out in the quarter. Armwood’s offense has no where to go, thanks to Baldwin and linebacker Beau Hume. They are wrapping up guys and preventing big plays.

3:15 Looks like Aaron Murray has taken one hit too many. After scrambling for three yards on fourth-and-7 from the Hawks 30-yard line, Murray was bounced around by a several Armwood defenders. He was helped to the sideline by Plant coaches after getting hit in the shin. Armwood’s Casey Callahan was also shaken up on the play. Trainers are working on Murray on the sideline. He’s having trouble putting weight on his right leg.

:11 Giddins and Smith are back in the game. Armwood’s punt just rolled out of bounds at Plant’s five-yard line.

END OF THIRD QUARTER ARMWOOD 7, PLANT 2

FOURTH QUARTER

10:58 Murray’s back in the game, but the Panthers just can’t get anything going on offense. On third-and-4 from their own 11, Murray was flushed out of the pocket into the end zone and attempted to throw the ball as he was tackled. He was called for intentional grounding, giving Armwood a safety and two points. ARMWOOD 9, PLANT 2

9:51 Plant senior defensive back Walter Hudnall just picked off Jackson and returned the ball to the Panthers 43-yard line. The return was aided by a monster block from Plant defensive lineman Javon Mention. Armwood offensive lineman Dillard Hurley was shaken up on the block. The Panthers offense failed to take advantage of the turnover, going three-and-out.

5:10 Plant’s defense continues to give its offense plenty of opportunities to win the game. The Panthers defense is making life miserable for Mywan Jackson, who fumbled the snap on third-and-8 and was tackled by a host of Plant defenders, forcing the Hawks to punt.

3:25 If the Panthers are going to win this game, they’re going to have to drive 90 yards to do it. Plant’s offense is finally putting some plays together, including a Murray to Sampson hookup for 19 yards and another for connection for 11 yards and a first down.

2:19 Plant’s moving the ball on Armwood’s defense and Murray’s not showing any signs of being hurt after he rushed 11 yards for a first down. Faced with third-and-five from the Hawks 24-yard line, Murray’s pass attempt, after his arm was hit, was intercepted by Armwood’s Angelo Hadley. That’s it for the Panthers chances.

FINAL SCORE ARMWOOD 9, PLANT 2
