Hillsborough County:

FHSAA board will hold emergency meeting July 15

The Florida High School Athletic Association Board of Directors will hold an emergency meeting July 15 at 1 p.m. in Gainesville.

The purpose of the meeting will be to reconsider the maximum game reduction vote so it complies with gender equity laws.

The FHSAA is being sued by Florida’s Parents for Athletic Equity, which cited the board’s April vote to reduce the maximum number of games by 20 percent for all varsity sports, except football, and 40 percent for sub-varsity sports, including football, was in violation of Title IX.

“Although the overriding reason for the reduction was to ease the financial burden on the schools in Florida, it would not help to turn around and have them pay money in legal fees for actions in litigation,” said Executive Director Roger Dearing in a release.

In other state prep news, The West Coast Officials Association of Tampa was named the 2008-09 FHSAA Officials Association of the Year at the June 5-6, 2009, Officials Leadership Conference in Orlando.
