Bucs/Jags Recap

Well now, that’s what it looks like when we play a team that came to play.  In week one, the Dolphins were totally outmatched - but then again the blocking and tackling dummies in their training facility give them a run for their money.  The Patriots have looked anything but inspired to play ball this preaseason.  But DelRio had his Jags ready to rumble, and they brought it to us.

Jeff Garcia looked like a guy who hasn’t played in a long time.  He settled in a bit during his last drive.  You have to believe he will be fine.  Brian Griese did a lot to inspire my confidence in saying, despite Roy Cumming’s man-crush on Luke McCown in insisting that Luke has won the number 2 job, Brian Griese should absolutely be our second stringer.  Luke looked absolutely horrible on his first series, then went on to look great in nearly leading the come-from-behind.  I agree with Gruden’s own oft-verbalized assessment: Luke is inconsistent.  I ask again: Wouldn’t we be better with Chris Simms or Josh Johnson as our number 3?  Speaking of those two - no sign of either of them this week.

The running of Michael Bennett excites me.  I have a feeling that we’re all going to be pleased with the running game this year.  Who doesn’t make the team?  Does Kenneth Darby have a shot?  How about Clifton Smith?  Although I love these kinds of Cinderella stories, they both seem like real long-shots in the roster logjam.

The kicker!  I’m telling you, I’m losing sleep!  They say that he’s had one of the best camps a kicker has ever had.  Perfect.  In this preseason he’s been a flop.  And, am I the only one who notices that while our return guys are regularly having to decide whether to bring the ball out of the end-zone, our opponents consistently field our kick-offs at the 15 yard line?  Mark my words, this guy is going to have Gruden chewing Rolaids all year.  Why is there not some competition in camp for Matt Bryant?  Oh yeah, it’s because there are a dozen QB’s on the roster.

I still like Mike.  Clayton, that is.  Another pretty good game catching, and blocking down field.

Hey, and the kid whose name I can’t spell - that first rounder Achoo Taloo, or whoever… looked mighty good out there.  I’m going to have to learn how to say his name!  That kid might stick.

What did you see out there this week?

About Darin:

Darin Shaw has served as the Senior Pastor at Christ's Church of Amherst, N.H., since January 2000. He's written a few blurbs, led a few projects and produced a few cool things over the years. The very best of what he's produced are four wonderful girls - Amanda, Katie, Becky and Emily - he managed to pull that off along with his lovely wife Shari. Together they all live in a red house surrounded by lots of trees in the same community with lots of really great people. He is known to hang out on Sunday mornings with people of a much higher caliber than he, and counts that among life's greatest privileges. Then, on Sunday afternoons, Darin and his family settle in for the full slate of NFL games, shouting loudest when the Buccaneers take the field.

Key Stats: 6-2, 240 ... 16-year veteran of Pastoral Ministry out of Florida Bible College and Southwestern Bible College and Theological Seminary ... Boasts of being able to count on one hand the number of Buccaneers games he has missed (either having been there in person, watched on television, or listened to the radio) since they entered the NFL in 1976. ... Sports a lifetime 74 percent accuracy in NFL prognostication ... Certifiable Jesus freak; loving husband; devoted father; zealous blogger.
