Alonso senior baseball player Tito Martinez has verbally committed to Polk Community College, Ravens coach Landy Faedo said Tuesday evening.
Martinez, Alonso’s starting shortstop the past two seasons, has been an asset for the Ravens both in the field and at the plate. He put together his best offensive season with Alonso in 2009, hitting .385 with seven doubles, two triples, a home run, seven RBIs and 33 runs scored out of the leadoff spot for the Class 6A state champion Ravens. He also stole 20 bases. As a sophomore, he hit .338 with six doubles, a triple, 11 RBIs, 26 runs scored and 12 stolen bases.
Martinez has played some of his best baseball at the annual Saladino Tournament. He was a member of the all-tournament team as a freshman (while at Sickles) and sophomore (with Alonso) and played a big part in the Ravens winning last year’s event.
Martinez joins pitcher Thomas Dorminy (USF) and second baseman Tyler Ding (Tampa) as Ravens seniors to commit to a college program.
