There is this recently updated joke making the rounds in New York: What’s the difference between the Yankees and the Mets?
A. The Yankees have 27 World Series championships and two uniforms and the Mets have two World Series championships and 27 uniforms.
OK, that might be a stretch. I’m not sure how many uniforms the Mets wear during the course of the season, though I do know it is more than the Yankees, who wear just two - the famed pinstripes at home and the battleship gray on the road.
I was reminded of that joke when I learned the Rays are adding a fourth jersey this season, a light blue jersey to be worn during Sunday games at the Trop.
This gives the Rays four uniforms - the home white and road grays and the Rays blue pullover favored by James Shields.
In fact, the starting pitcher has the say in which jersey is worn that game - white or blue at home; gray or blue on the road.
Expect the Rays to officially announce the addition of the new top next week with players signing autographs at selected stores across the Tampa Bay area.
