TAMPA - Bucs place kicker Matt Bryant’s infant son Matthew Tryson died Wednesday, Bucs coach Jon Gruden announced following the team’s practice.
“We’ve lost a member of our family,’’ Gruden said. “I don’t have many details on it. We just ask that Bucs fans keep Matt and his family in their prayers at this time.’‘
Tryson was born in June. Gruden said that as far as he knew, the child “just didn’t wake up this morning.’‘
The team knelt in prayer at the end of the workout Wednesday.
“It’s a horrible tragedy,’’ Gruden said. “This really puts things in perspective.’‘
According to Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Debbie Carter, deputies responded to Bryant’s home at 7:33 a.m. Wednesday. The sheriff’s office is conducting a death investigation.
“It doesn’t appear to be suspicious,” Carter said of the 3-month-old’s death.
Carter said Bryant’s wife, Melissa, was getting the couple’s six children ready for school and when she went to wake up the 3-month-old, he did not respond.
“Like everyone, the news of Matt and Melissa Bryant’s son Tryson hit me hard today,’’ Bucs punter Josh Bidwell said in a statement issued by the team. “Having kids of my own I couldn’t imagine the pain that is associated with such a terrible loss. The entire extended Buccaneers family will be there for the Bryants in every way possible to help them during this difficult time. We hope that everyone keeps them in their thoughts and prayers.”
Gruden said he was uncertain whether the tragedy would keep Bryant from kicking in this week’s game against the Packers.
Bucs officials said information regarding donations or expressions of sympathy will be announced as soon as arrangements have been made.
The team also issued a statement from General Manager Bruce Allen: “The entire Buccaneer family is deeply saddened by this tragedy. The Bryants have been an inspiration to our entire community through their commitment to their family and their exhaustive efforts working with children and those in need in the Bay area. Our thoughts and prayers are with Matt and Melissa during this difficult time.’‘

I am not really sure if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your great job is clearly identified. I was wondering if you offer any subscription to your RSS feeds as I would be very interested and can’t find any link to subscribe here

Having lost my baby boy last year, my heart goes out to the Bryant family. There is no pain greater than losing your child. I know that Tryson will give them all the strength they need to get through this difficult time.

Have the family (Bryant) check his date of last vaccination. Our son was damaged by one and we had a son die of ‘crib death’ that possibly was related to this.

My thoughts& prayers go out to Matt,Mellisa and their entire family.
I met Matt& Mellisa down in Princess Cays and I was the one girl who had on a Tampa Bay Buc tank top and Mellisa was so nice and started talking to me while we were out in the water. She introduced herself to my son and I and told me that Matt was out snorkeling. Well, minutes later Matt came up and said hi and I have to say they were the nicest people ever. Our family is so sorry for your loss.

Little consolation, but this lifelong Packer fan of 50 years was glad to see Bryant score the winning points. I shed a few tears today, and it wasn’t over the game. God Bless the Bryants, and I hope His blessings bring some comfort to them.

I was so glad to see you play today, Matt. It is the worst thing I can think of to lose a child, but I saw my mother highly depressed over losing my infant brother before I was born—her depression lasting her entire life until her 80’s. This affected how she (didn’t) raise my sister and me and how it affected EVERYTHING in our lives. I know you were getting your strength from your baby to play today, and you played mightily. Good for you. Love to you, Melissa, and your other children and family.

Football Fan, you are SICK. GO AWAY. I can’t believe your inhuman crass callousness. Being more concerned with your inconsequential fantasy stats than with the tragic death of a player’s CHILD?!? I’m appalled.

I can’t even believe what I have read here…football fan, you should be ashamed. I guess Matt Bryant must’ve felt some sort of guilt today, since you picked him up because your kicker is on a bye. You are a loser. You need to get out your checkbook, and make a donation to St. Jude’s or March of Dimes now, before you burn in Hell for eternity. I can’t express enough what a tool you are.
Matt, thanks for the great memories with the Bucs, and your professionalism is appreciated by Bucs fans around the country. Please stay strong. My heart is breaking today, as I watch you kick FG after FG.

To the Bryants,
I know you must be saddened to the utmost, but I pray that God grants you peace and understanding during this time. He is still in control. God Bless!

My heart goes out to the Bryant family. I have a 3 month old grandson and a 2 year old granddaughter. They are my heart and soul. I don’t know what I would do if one of them were taken
As for the nit-wit who posted the comment about Matt Bryant owing him 20 dollars… you have no heart. How dare you call yourself a fan!!!! You are a heartless piece of garbage!!!!!!

What a tragedy for the Bryant Family. I am a mother of an 11 year old and when a tragic death takes place it makes you stop and think of how we take life for granted at times. My prayers are with the family, the team and fellow friends. May God Bless each and everyone of you with love and peace. My favorite scripture in times of questioning “Be still and know that I am God.”
