TAMPA – The Bucs may not be sitting out free agency after all.
A report by Brad Biggs of the NationalFootballPost says the Bucs have shown huge interest in free agent defensive end Aaron Kampman.
Kampman is considered the second best defensive end in free agency, after Julius Peppers.
The Seahawks are believed to be the team leading the race for Kampman, who is coming off a difficult 2009 season.
The year started with Kampman moving from defensive end in a 4-3 scheme to outside linebacker in a 3-4.
It ended with Kampman on injured reserve with a knee injury, but along the way he did produce 3.5 sacks.
Kampman’s health will be a big factor, but if he’s healthy he could easily improve the Bucs pass rush.
Kampman and Texans wide receiver Kevin Walter are believed to be among the targets the Bucs are pursuing the hardest.
Walter caught 53 passes last year and is considered to be something of a third down specialist – an Ike Hilliard type, only bigger and younger.
