Bucs Report
Petitgout Released

TAMPA - Add Luke Petitgout to long list of free agent offensive linemen who failed to pay dividends for the Bucs.

Petitgout, a veteran left tackle who signed a three-year $15 million contract before last season, was released Saturday.

The release come as Petitgout was fighting to regain his spot on the team after suffering a knee injury that cut short his 2007 season. The Bucs were hoping Petitgout would provide fill-in starter Donald Penn with some competition for the starter’s job, but the Bucs apparently were under the impression that Petitgout would not recover in time to play this season.

I heard that petitgout was getting ready to be suspended for 4 games for violating the leagues substance abuse policy.  this is also why teh Bucs cut him

See Nick, I’m not so unreasonable.

Just got back from the Game…Awesome was Antonio! Whats this Mitch from NYC posting something I believe to be true?Too many good LBs, TEs & WR’s to keep a guy who can’t pass the the physical.

Cval is exactly right on target here.Petitgout came here with a back injury and was suspect from the start.LT’s are a premium in this league.Other teams don’t just release them if they still hold any value, even as a back-ups. It’s too valuable a position. The Bucs threw money at damaged goods once again and lost.
This isn’t a rant about management. The Bucs have done a good job of drafting talent and developing it, so you have to give them credit there. It would just be nice to see them stop continually wasting millions on reclaimation projects on the OL.
If thirty other teams aren’t that interested in a guy….there’s probably a reason for that.

Good move. He played well those few games, but we sure need the Spot for someone else. Anthony Davis has played left tackle. He wasn’t great either, but he had some good games. I think Sears ends up moving Left with Zuttah taking his Guard spot. Trueblood is right where he should be & moving him left is too much of a shakeup. Benning should get a good amount of work at center this Season. Have they tried Zuttah at left tackle yet? Hopefully Penn does the job well. This is one of the ??? on the team. Go Bucs!!!

Football is all about the crystal ball. The draft, free agents, whether the other team will blitz. Every team makes mistakes, because no one can see the future with 100% efficiency. Our doctors, scouts, and coaches are not dummies (BTW, they get paid to do this and we don’t). They knew the risk, made a calculated move. Did it pay the dividends they had hoped? I don’t think so. But that happens. To continually bash our front office is kinda dumb. First we complain they sign no one, then we complain when the people they sign get injured (or re-injured). Bill Muir has been instumental in assemblying a fresh young o-line that will wear down and carve up other defenses.

Zuttah!

Comments about it being too late to change the offensive line are wrong.Petitgout was part of the team he practiced and the Buc’s didn’t practice with a hole in the line because of a missing Petitgout. This is the middle of preseason. The decisions are being made,Petitgout wasn’t a part of it and the adjustment has ALREADY been made. Will there be other tweaking moves on the line=sure just like normal.

CVal,
You should get your facts straight. Penn held up well against the pass but his actual weakness or inconsistency was in the run department…They should and will draft a young LT this coming up draft…to complete the building of the next “Dominant” O-Line in the NFL.

everyone (and their brother) knew this guy had suspect knees…the giants couldn’t believe that anyone would be so foolish to throw money away like that…he was solid in his day, but there just wasn’t any tread left on those tires…i agree with cval…another horrible signing by a front office that operates like a rudderless ship…by the way, where is that “tiger woods” signing promised last spring??  must have been griese…

Petitgout was a decent signing.  He was playing well until he got injured again.  It is not like he never recovered from the injury he suffered with the Giants.  Injuries happen, it is part of football.

Penn played well last year and I think he will do even better this year.  I think we should leave Trueblood at RT, and not look into making the switch until next year when Zuttah will be more prepared.

If pettigout wasn’t going to play this year, I’d rather see that roster spot being used by someone who can.  Again, nothing against Luke, he obviously wasn’t going to play this year and that’s why he was cut, not cause he wouldn’t be a valuable member of the O-Line (if healthy).

Posted by  Mitch R, NYC on 08/16  at  09:07 PM

CVal, this move was made for one reason, they don’t think he can play this year.  It has nothing to do with his ‘Ability’ which is why he was signed in the first place.  He suffered a major knee injury and obviously has not made it back into playing shape.  And also, check your facts on Reese’s comments about him, he didn’t say that Pettigout couldn’t play anymore, he just didn’t see why the NY media was making such a big deal over him cutting him when he had another guy making less money that he felt was just as good.

I doubt the Bucs let Petitgout go unless they have a high level of confidence in Penn.  Plus, the reserves must be coming along real well.

CVal,

Good points.  Good to see there are more Bucs fans in Nashville. Tn.

CVal,

I Dont think Penn is all that bad. According to Stats.com Penn only committed one holding in 12 games and gave up 6.5 sacks.

The sack number is a little high [for 12 games] but he’s only 25 and that was his first year starting. We won’t know until the games start but a year of experience and a full training camp under his belt he might end up being pretty good.

Once again, poor judgement by Bucs Mngmt.  Didn’t the Giants coach say this would happen? (yes, publicly)- Remember? Now, if Zuttah is so great according to Cummings report, what happened to plan to try Trueblood at LT and Zuttah the Strong at RT?  Maybe too late now.  I don’t know. Penn is mediocre but deficient at pass blocking. The others OT’s aren’t good enough to be backups.
