With Jon Gruden declining comment Tuesday, it was left for Bucs OL coach Bill Muir to defend a defending division champion still coping with the fallout from the Jerramy Stevens signing and recent public remarks by Chris Simms critical of Tampa Bay’s seventh-year coach.
“All I know is what’s going on inside this building—there is no controversy,’’ said Muir, who joined Gruden’s inaugural 2002 staff in Tampa. “There’s single purpose of mind, from the head coach to the last player on the roster. The media’s job is to stir things up and they seem to be doing a very good job of it, but it’s not being stirred inside. The controversy is from outside the building.’’
Featured RB Earnest Graham hasn’t been working out at the facility and No. 1 QB Jeff Garcia is disgruntled with his contract, but Muir is stressing the positive six weeks before Tampa Bay players and coaches head to training camp.
“You go to our board and see the participation in the offseason program, you see the effort outside here in the OTAs, you see the attention in the meeting rooms,’’ Muir said. “The only issues we have are New Orleans and Atlanta. Those are our issues. I’ve been doing this a long time and it’s an encouraging group to be around.’’
According to Simms, his relationship with Gruden is likely frayed beyond repair.
“I can only tell you this because everyone will think I’m sucking up to the head coach, but for all of those Gruden haters out there, I really don’t care,’’ said Muir. “They don’t know what a real football coach is supposed to be like. I’ve been around a real football coach or two in my life – this is a real football coach. End of story. He’s a real football coach.’’

last but not least…Gruden for the last few seasons has finished 9-7 and 8-8 with a lot of injuries to a lot of our team!If u cant see that tampa is on the rise…anyone who cant see that, u most be seriously slow! we won the division and made the playoffs and lost to the superbowl champs(hint…everyone did)!but we did it with a young defense and a 3rd string running back! All the people dogging on Gruden knock it off…u r setting urself up for a downfall!!!!!!! Gruden is a great coach…but definitely not comparing him to the best of the best…YET!!!!
Posted by James Gonnelly, Palm Bay Florida on 06/12 at 03:48 PM
Also…Dungy was and is a great coach, but he couldnt win the big game!He isnt a so called dick of a coach and won a superbowl cause his whole team was and still are nothing but probowlers!colts have the best offense and havd had it for the past 5 years(atleast)!Even if everyone was right about Gruden winning the SB with dungy’s team, dungy couldnt do it with his own team…so Gruden coming in and being a dick must have been what we needed!

Secondly…Stevens messes up once or twice,as for as i’ve heard he is a good teammate! On top of that he has great potential! Erik i hate to say this but ur an idiot for putting him and T.O. in the same sentence! Dont get me wrong i think alex smith should be or primary target at TE but stevens is a great security!

For one…i think Chris Simms is a big baby!i havent wanted that dude for the last 3 seasons! Gruden wanted him gone and the glazer family kept him! I wouldnt act like i liked the kid anymore either!Simms just needs to grow a pair!

Erik, I’d guess your miserable because of where you live, when we are here basking in the Sun, on the Beach, on the Boat, Sipping Pina Coladas. Be Advised Clown. We are wolves in Sheeps clothing. BaaaBaaaaCHOMP!!!

Hey eric, Gruden won the Sb with dungy’s team. Name me some key players Dungy brought us that helped us win the SB. Gruden came in and added key players on offense that helped us win the SB. Gruden won the SB with his offense and Kiffin’s defense not Dungy’s team. Dungy was agreat coach but he couldn’t get the job done even with kiffin’s defense. I’m sick of everyone asying Gruden won teh SB with Dungy’s tam.

Erik, to your statement to winning the “division is good enough” yes it is sometimes good enough, That means we got into the playoffs where as alot teams do not make it. So which means we were one of the best teams that season. Winning a super bowl every year is impossible and Every team has its ups and downs. You cant always expect to win the super bowl year and year out. The was no way we would have defeated the cheating Pats in those years if we did make it. Point is Gruden is the coach, live with it stop complaining because whining doesnt get you nowhere.

Gruden didn’t want T.O. and his “distractions” but, Allen resigns Stevens? Giving away $3.5 million is ok but, Allen can’t give Jeff Garcia $3.5 million more? Gruden has won a Superbowl with Dungys’ team! Gruden is a good coach but, Gibbs,Knoll, Parcels, Shula, Lombardi are great legendary coaches.

Baaaa! Baaa! You guys are a bunch of sheep! Is winning the division every other year good enough? How about going 9-6,8-8 every year? Having star players yelling at the “coach” during critical games is ok? Grudens’ calls and decisions costs us 3 games not including the playoff game against the Giants!Chuckie died and left us with a confused, overbearring, Gruden with a complex playbook Eistein can’t understand. He wanted Bennett last year and couldn’t get him on the field effectively?! I he has an extension but to me, the Gruden/Allen era is over. Now we suffer…..The YUCK is Back! Thanx Glazer family!

i can tell todd has been watching nfl replay. i saw the same chyron. it was nice to watch the bucs spank the saints again. by the way, i live in raider nation. everyone here is still sore about losing gruden, then losing to gruden. so, all of you gruden haters be careful of what you wish for! the raider’s best record since that super bowl is 5-11! i think our offense should be pretty good this year. if injuries do accure, we have experienced backups (and then some). CHUCKY is back. hate it or love it, get over it. the man wins football games!

I agree with Bill Muir about Gruden. I’ve always thought the job he did to come in here and take a half baked Tony Dungy team, who could NEVER win in Philly, let alone at temperatures under 40 degrees Fahrenheit and go into Philly and kick their butts, the way they did, was genius. Many forget John Lynch’s words after that season: “Jon Gruden is a genius. I’ve been around a lot of football coaches but I’ve never seen a guy who can mentally prepare a team for the big game the way he can.” Injuries, free agency, etc., took their toll on Gruden. Now, he’s back!
Watch him put all the naysayers to bed and tuck them in, in the the next two years. Oh and one more thing: Bill Muir is one heck of a football coach too.

Here is a stat that all you Gruden non-believers can ponder. This is coming staight from the NFL Network. Under Jon Gruden, The Tampa Bay Bucs are 16-0 when they DO NOT turn the ball over. It’s not Grudens fault when they turn the ball over. Everybody can try and look that one up because it is a fact.

Wade, Stagman. I agree 110%. Our whole team is good. The Offensive line is so good we will produce 2 - 1000 yard rushers, not just 1. Talk about “pound the rock”. We ain’t seen nothin yet. Cadilac will be envious sitting on IR, but it will likely happen. We have too many good players to hold his spot open. I think it will be 09’ before he returns, but I hope he gets a chance sooner. He is due for a good year with a good line, but we’ll make it anyway.

I agree with wade less.
Gruden & Allen know what they are doing.
Just watch that offensive line blow people off the ball this year. We have the best o-line in Bucs history.
Plus last time I checked, we are WAY under the salary cap, and the $3.5 million of cap space for next year, is well worth the 6th rounder we gave up or Plummer’s rights.
You were all screaming about S. Rice last year after he declined a counter-offer that was worth way too much his value. How did that work out for us?
The Broncos realized he wasn’t worth a warm glass of #####.
Quit questioning Coach Gruden & Allen, we are lucky to have them, just ask the Raiders.

The same people that rip Gruden were the same people that ran Dungy out of town. Tampa fans need to get real: three division titles; one super bowl. WHEN we win the division this year the Grudenh8ers will not be able to deny that Jon Gruden is Tampa football. Deal with it and enjoy the wins #####.

Thank goodness someone (muir) spoke up. I am sick and tired of hearing bucs fans complain about Coach Gruden. I have been a Bucs fan all of my life, Gruden brings us stability, not to mention he finished the deal that Dungy couldn’t - A LOMBARDI TROPHY.

John Valenti—- You’re an idiot, how old are you, do you think Gruden compares to those guys? Really?
Posted by BigBucFan, Sarasota on 06/11 at 07:13 PM
Yes, it’s still there on the Bucs’ website video archive. Re: 11/25/2007 Highlights: Bucs 19, Redskins 13. Even the Cop at the end of the tape escorting Gruden looked at Coach and was like “What’s up Gibbs you know what?” I’m glad he retired. Gibbs, Tony Stewart & Kyle Busch all deserve each other.

Hey Buddy from Texas, did you see the Bucs game against Washington at RayJay last Season. Search Bucs’ archives for that game videos. The interception by the Bucs that won the Game as time was running out. After the Skins lost and the 2 coaches ran to mid field to greet & shake hands. Joe Gibbs barely touched Grudens’ hand, didn’t say a word as Gruden said “Good Game” paying respect to the Senior Coach as he does with all senior Coaches, win or lose. Gibbs about ran him over. It was the poorest display of Sportsmanship I’d ever seen. Especially from Joe Gibbs. Sore Loser. & Karma. 2 days later Sean Taylor was Slain. It was really weird & no one really acknowledged it at the time. I saw it, I was there at the Ship.

Scott, your exactly right, I am sick and tired of hearing about dungy too. He is a good man but D%$N give it a break !! He hasn’t been our coach in 7 yrs. And the only reason he won a SB is because of Peyton Manning. Everybody needs to move on!! He is not our coach anymore and never will be again. Period !!

Born in Tampa, Bucs fan since the beginning. Are half the people in Tampa ignorant, or just have long term memory loss? I get so fed up reading about what a great coach Dungy was, it makes me want to puke. When he was in Tampa, everyone complained that he couldn’t win the big one. If his players loved him so much, why did they win for Gruden instead? Answer: Because he is a jerk who demands more of the players. He isn’t their friend, he isn’t their preacher, he’s the FOOTBALL COACH! He’s the best coach Tampa has ever had. If you run him out of town, you’ll regret it…until it comes time to start griping about the next coach.

All I got to say is Tony Dungy doesn’t treat his players like this and he won a Super Bowl, Joe Gibbs doesn’t treat his like this either, and he won three super bowls…Last time I checked they were real coaches…I like Gruden but he needs to treat Simms better

I was hoping that I woudlnt have anything common with anthony anymore, however he says he is only going to follow the gators, the school i go to. Great coaches dont have to great people. Urban Meyer is a hardass and is a complete ##### to everyone; trust me I know about 5 guys that work for the football team and numerous players, but everyone respects him. Look at the coaches urban meyer associates himself with and takes after. Bellichek, Del Rio, all tough coaches that now how to get results. Gruden is similar, hard-nosed coach that not everyone likes but they do respect him.

Erik from PA is right on. I love the fact that you Gruden lovers and hard core Bucs fans are so fanatical, but unrealistic. Keep dreaming your pipe dreams. If they come close, like winning the division, then they will fall short. There are too many teams in the NFL now that are on a higher echelon. The Bucs will stay in the middle where they belong with Gruden and Allen. I love the stigma of all the ex-Bucs that have gone on to bigger, better things, starting off with Doug Williams, i love that stat, tell me more about the ex-Buc stat, all you sports fan freaks with nothing else better to do or know.
