With Jon Gruden declining comment Tuesday, it was left for Bucs OL coach Bill Muir to defend a defending division champion still coping with the fallout from the Jerramy Stevens signing and recent public remarks by Chris Simms critical of Tampa Bay’s seventh-year coach.
“All I know is what’s going on inside this building—there is no controversy,’’ said Muir, who joined Gruden’s inaugural 2002 staff in Tampa. “There’s single purpose of mind, from the head coach to the last player on the roster. The media’s job is to stir things up and they seem to be doing a very good job of it, but it’s not being stirred inside. The controversy is from outside the building.’’
Featured RB Earnest Graham hasn’t been working out at the facility and No. 1 QB Jeff Garcia is disgruntled with his contract, but Muir is stressing the positive six weeks before Tampa Bay players and coaches head to training camp.
“You go to our board and see the participation in the offseason program, you see the effort outside here in the OTAs, you see the attention in the meeting rooms,’’ Muir said. “The only issues we have are New Orleans and Atlanta. Those are our issues. I’ve been doing this a long time and it’s an encouraging group to be around.’’
According to Simms, his relationship with Gruden is likely frayed beyond repair.
“I can only tell you this because everyone will think I’m sucking up to the head coach, but for all of those Gruden haters out there, I really don’t care,’’ said Muir. “They don’t know what a real football coach is supposed to be like. I’ve been around a real football coach or two in my life – this is a real football coach. End of story. He’s a real football coach.’’

<AS FAR as being an offensive genius, well I have yet to see it with any of the players he has had, Any one can look good if he has great players, it takes the genius to use less talent and get more out of it. >
Lou, name one offensive genius who didn’t have good players? I don’t think you can… Gruden has had mediocre offensive players since he has been here. A good coach still needs good players. It’s like a stereo system. A good Tuner doesn’t matter if you have bad speakers. Or even bad speaker wire. Gruden’s a pretty good tuner, the rest of the system needs more work. I think an area he lacks in is hiring offensive coaches. He needs better position coaches.

Mr. Muir,
I admire and commend you for coming forward and setting the record straight. I for one have great admiration for Mr. Gruden and believe he’s one hell of a Head Coach.
Thank you…

Gruden sucks. I will be hard for me to be a Bucs fan ever again. There never was offensive genius, never. I have not been a Bucs fan for a long time already, and I do not plan to go back, just because they win. They will never get another championship with Gruden and Allen again. Muir talks about how all the problems come from outside the Bucs building. Of course, because there are a ton of fans that see Gruden for what he is, not that good. The media and a lot of people outside of that building are unhappy with Gruden and Allen, especially Gruden. As soon as we got our championship, we should have fired him. I know this never gets done, but WE WILL NOT SEE ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP WITH GRUDEN.

I always liked Dungy, still do, but that comment, Jayson is Hilarious. We need more comments like that. keep up the good work & please apply for work at 620AM or the Tribune the next time your in Tampa.

Doug revis: You say Gruden could only win with “Dungy’s players”? Well thats more than what Dungy could do. Dungy couldn’t win with “Dungy’s players”!

Muir is right, He is a good football coach. All the Gruden haters on here are not true Buc fans. Because we always get these sorry ##### loser Saint and Falcon fans ect… on here talking a bunch of bullcrap. Stiring up a bunch of non educated comments.

Does everybody expect Gruden to have huge media events and cry for the lose of Sapp and Lynch maybe a nice big hug? As for Stevens he messed up a long time ago everybody has, shoot Talib failed some drug tests…..Three years ago, people change
Why is every body is so set on bringing up the past. Gruden/Allen were forced to let those players go.. Salary cap.C’mon you dont just release players like that. And How long has it been since Dungy was in Tampa? Give it up . For what Tampa has had in the player department we do pretty well and every year they are getting better on both sides of the ball….and we have plenty of salary cap for years to come… Heres your shot Stevens and Talib make us proud…GO GRUDENS BUCSvoid(0);

good football coah, failure as a people person, he never learned as a kid “surround yourself with good people and good things happen, surround yourself with scumbags and bad things happen, Why do you think the jails are packed? all thos enice guys running around, half of them play for the bucs, bengals and cowboys.

From what I hear from the players through talk radio personally from their mouths is that he and Bruce Allen both lie or avoid players. Gruden won with Tony Dungy players and now I am still a Bucs fan but it is getting more and more difficult with what he is bringing in here. He is not an offensive genius. His playbook is too difficult and a coach will adapt to his personnel. Listen to 620am and Ian Beckles and his cohost and hear the interviews. The media only prints and produces what is there. That is their job. They need more character players like Warrick Dunn and Derrick Brooks. Jerramy Stevens belongs in prison for what he has done. He will do it again.

I don’t think Gruden is a bad coach, he just does not have people skills. He would throw anyone under the bus in the name of winning. I have seen him destroy a superbowl team and then take credit for winning a division title in a division that is at best under average. WHEN he wins a title that HE earns then I will be all for him. AS FAR as being an offensive genius, well I have yet to see it with any of the players he has had, Any one can look good if he has great players, it takes the genius to use less talent and get more out of it.

You tell em Bill!!! Way to go, Ball Coach. Don’t worry Chuckie, we got your Back. You take care of OUR TEAM and we’ll keep Fighting the Ignorance of the Haters & Reporters that don’t know Football. But Ira Knows his Food. That’s apparent, and Roy knows Hair, but thats the extent of it. Go Bucs. See you at Disney next month.

I begged for Gruden to come to Tampa. Unfortunately he came without his “offensive genius ” playbook. He came without the ability to train quarterbacks. He is an arrogant guy to boot. 9-7 isn’t beans. The only reason we made the playoffs was due to the mediocrity of the divison we are in. Oh, he forgot to bring his motivational playbook too. See ya Jon.

Gruden does have his good points, but it’s pretty clear that when he no longer wants you on his team, he simply walks away. Remember all the gushing he did over Sapp, only to not even offer him a contract. Or Lynch, who was more or less cut in the middle of the night and told to take a hike. Or Rice, who was shown the door as soon as Adams was signed. Now there’s Simms, who’s done nothing but literally lay his life on the line for the Bucs. I don’t hate Gruden, but I find it really hard to like him.
