Jefferson’s victory over Spoto Saturday night didn’t just mark the Dragons second-consecutive victory. It marked an even larger number for Coach Tom Mosca.
The Dragons 76-42 victory was his 400th high school win. If you add in the win totals from his 13 seasons as the University of Tampa’s girls basketball head coach, Mosca eclipsed the 600 mark this season. He hit that mark in Jefferson’s 77-21 victory against Brandon on Jan. 6.

“It’s a number that snuck up,” Mosca said. “It’s a lot of games and it’s a lot of wins. It’s a lot of good players. It’s for sure a lot of good players that have played hard and made it happen.”
Not bad for a man who resisted the urge to coach girls when he was a junior varsity boys basketball and assistant football coach at Robinson. But in 1975, as the state of Florida began fostering girls basketball, Mosca became the Knights first girls coach.
“I didn’t want to have anything to do with coaching girls basketball,” Mosca said. “Girls basketball wasn’t a big deal then. I was a young guy and had made the decision I was going to be a boys basketball and football coach. But I got forced into saying “yeah” and it took off from there.”
