Bucs Report
Henry, Bucs Doesn’t Appear To Be A Match

TAMPA - I had a conversation with Chris Henry’s agent a little while ago. He said there are actually two NFL teams that are interested in giving Henry a tryout. The Bucs, however, are not one of them.

No surprise there. Though the Bucs are on record as saying they will consider signing anybody who they think can make their football team better, signing the troubled Henry always seemed like a stretch of the biggest proportions.

It’s not just the possibility (or should we say likelihood) that Henry will wind up missing practice and playing time because of his latest run in with the law. There’s also the fact that the Bucs seem quite content to go with what they already have at Henry’s position.

That, in fact, has sort of been their take all offseason. They did virtually nothing to address their apparent need at receiver during free agency, then followed up by doing virtually nothing to improve that position during the draft.

Sure, they drafted Dexter Jackson in the second round, but Jackson is something of a project at receiver. He was drafted primarily to improve the return game and with the hope or expectation that he will one day develop into a regular contributor at split end.

The plan it seems is to lean more heavily on Michael Clayton and Maurice Stovall at flanker and to hope that one of either Paris Warren or Chad Lucas can earn the right to take some snaps away from Joey Galloway at split end.

It’s not a bad approach, but if it doesn’t work out the Bucs will have opened themselves up to a lot of criticism for not doing more to improve what many perceive to be the biggest area of need on their team.

You guys have a beast in Maurice Stovall he is big strong and runs great routes. He has bnot been given enough touches to really prove the type of receiver that he is. I watched this kid grow from a little boy into a high school phenom in football and track into an under used receiver for Notre Dame under Ty Willingham. When he finally got the chance to shine under Charlei Wiess his career took off. I tam sure that if given that same chance he will truly perform and amaze like he always has Go Birdy Hunter st. )

One and done is basically a moronic statement seeing that Gruden has won 3 division titles already Chris the Stupid. Maybe three and done would be more appropriate eh? And to think that the USA Today is the end-all in draft analysis is as silly as your one and done statement. You must be the posterboy for no child left behind. However, Gil Brandt (the Godfather of football analysis) felt as though the Bucs had a solid draft. I’ll go with the expert’s opinions, not the children left behind. The reason we are good now is because of solid line play as we all know skill positions are much easier to fill, but you wouldn’t understand that would you Chris?

Posted by  Robert Sesee, Tampa on 05/14  at  09:47 AM

Once again the Buc’s have failed to address the need at reciever. Drafting a return guy in the second round is silly considering how bad the recievers here are. Clayton is a bust and needs to be down the road but as usual Gruden is stuck on him and ignoring everyone else. The 2nd tier guys have as much talent as Clayton, probably more, and they just might shine if given the chance. Just ask Ernest Graham about Gruden’s hard headed ideas!!

For Kurt clones who can read and write…can you spell ONE & DONE…Gruden, does Coyer or Allen run your show now?...I am suspicious…YOU KNOW TALIB WOULDN’T CHANGE LAST YEAR OR THE NEXT…

Excerpt USA today..May 13 2008…

The Bucs’ biggest need heading into the NFL draft was for a game-breaking receiver.
Tampa Bay had its choice of any wideout in the draft when it selected Kansas cornerback Aqib Talib with the 20th overall pick…2nd round pick…
but Jackson is more of a kick returner than a receiver. In fact, he never caught more than 33 passes in any of his four seasons for the Mountaineers…

Roy, to pose as a fan (Harry) is really going a bit too far. Either that is the case or Harry has been drinking something very good over there in Orlando. I’m not sure what the criteria for having a really bad receiver corps is, but the Bucs are not in that category. If I’m not mistaken we won our division with a few games left last year. Even though Galloway is old, he’s still as fast as he needs to be Roy, I mean, Harry. (Remember Darrell Green?) The problem Roy/Harry is that you are making s#&t up which makes the coaching staff and front office look bad and then changing your tune when it turns out to be an unprovoked lie. Just report the news Roy/Harry OK? Thanks.

GRUDENS GONNA SEE WHAT THE ROOK CAN DO HE BELIEVES WITH OUR CORE OF RECIEVERS HEALTHY WE’LL BE FINE HOPEFULLY DA ROOK WILL BE ABLE TO GIVE JOEY A BREAK HERE AND THERE AND MAKE A COUPLE OF SPLASH PLAYS WITH HIS SPEED SOOOO NO NEED FOR MR HENRY

Posted by  Harry, Orlando on 05/13  at  09:56 AM

Roy, so rude of you to point out the same obvious negatives to all these myopic fans that EVERY NFL expert has remarked on: we have so little at receiver its a joke.  We need 7 or 8 quarterbacks on the roster, but receivers?  Naw, we don’t need any more of them.  I think Greise is going to line up at split end ... he’s going to be our “slash” guy, lol.  Hell, Galloway is only 63 now right?  Plenty of years left in his tank.  The Bucs have done NOTHING to improve this position.  If Jackson was drafted to return kicks, isn’t that also an attribute of Talib’s?  We are going to kick ##### on special teams.  And we better, because our offense is once again going to be “3 and out”.  Funny, isn’t offense supposed to be Gruden’s expertise?

Posted by  Skylar Zalamut, Charlotte, NC on 05/13  at  05:06 AM

Project receiver? You don’t draft a second rounder as a project Roy, he is the air apparent to Galloway plain and simple. Your commentary wreaks of pro-McKay bias. Get a grip please and start writing articles without your ridiculous slants. Can we get some unbiased writers in Tampa please?

Posted by  patrick dotson, tampa,fl on 05/10  at  04:56 PM

thats why i said what i said my last entry…the media and most of our supposed fans always have something negative to say bout our team…winning 3 divisional titles in 6 years…esp with 12 or 13 injuries every year for the last 3 yrs…our 4th string running back almost cleared a thousand yards and he didnt start until like week 5 or 6(correct me if im wrong…we have the youngest oline in the nfl and the last time i checked..they were doing pretty good…our defense was in the top 5 again…whats there to be negative about…we went out and filled holes we needed to in the draft…added depth at postions we needed to….so once again…WHERES THE PROBLEM AND THE NEED FOR NEGATIVITY…GO F%^*IN BUCS!

Posted by  BigBucFan, Sarasota on 05/10  at  03:23 PM

Wow Roy. It’s time for you to listen to the VAST majority of your readers. The NEGATIVES & speculation? We have a great team, even when plagued by injury, still win. The Draft and FA moves will improve this team. If Chucky, Bruce & The Bucs are so bad, why do so many players love to play here. I’m Proud to be a Buc Fan. I’m Horse after every game. Talk trash about the Bucs when I’m at the Game, we,re gonna fight. I don’t care who you are. It’s like Recon. If you can’t hack it, Pack it. The attitude we need to have is “Nobody comes in our House and pushes us around or talks bad about our team”. A Buc is a Buc is a Buc & has my support. Our fans need to get on board and support our team, yell and scream, and drink profusely.

So BUC-CA-ROOS this is the REAL Question: Are the BUCS sufficiently FA’d and DRAFT’D to get passed the FIRST round? Or is THIS the cheerleaders BLOG… And don’t be little girly men…an OK Roy article with not much new but you bloggers need to vent I guess…so 1st round wantabees maybe the Ravens get there with a rookie QB…we won’t forget….oh you got your project players to work on…BAG ON ROY some more guys…go ahead, make my day.

Posted by  Dennis Halpin, Jersey on 05/10  at  09:50 AM

Roy on May 6: “No one ‘round these parts would be at all surpised if it was the Bucs. They’ll do just about anything to improve their team, including offering wayward players a second or even third chance.”

Roy on May 8: “The Bucs, however, are not one of them.
No surprise there. Though the Bucs are on record as saying they will consider signing anybody who they think can make their football team better, signing the troubled Henry always seemed like a stretch of the biggest proportions.”

Ummm, Roy, make up your mind man

Posted by  Mitch R, NYC on 05/09  at  09:41 PM

This is a clear case of Roy trying to outsmart everyone.  His thinking is obvious, a) Bucs need an impact WR, b) Henry is available, c) Bucs take chances with troubled players.  Unfortunately, Roy’s not that smart and the Bucs are not that desparate.  The media in Tampa have created this so-called playmaking crisis which isn’t the case.

Posted by  Steve, Wesley Chapel on 05/09  at  07:51 PM

“No surprise there”?

Are you kidding? Cummings is the only reporter who had Henry coming to visit the Bucs yet he’s the one “not surprised”.

Seems to me he was the only one surprised….or disappointed.

Posted by  Fernando, Lakeland on 05/09  at  05:20 PM

Mr.Dotson well said!!!! Roy should move to Indy because he loves Dungy so much. The fact that he uses a lowlife like henry to attack the Bucs management and pick selections shows he is just justifying his job cause he is running out of crap to write!!!!
Roy I hope this picks turn great so I can put in my post: “Eat the crap you wrote”!!!!!!!

Posted by  patrick dotson, tampa,fl on 05/09  at  04:41 PM

you know what…everybody can talk s&*t bout this and that…presume this and presume that…this guy is goin to do this or hes not goin to do this…only prob is…NOBODY has seen any of our draft picks, free agents or undrafted free agency play yet…so how in the hell can anybody talk s*&t about what this team is goin to be like…and that includes mr.cummings…so tired of hearing the negative B.S. bout this team…GO BUCS!

ok everyone listen up…you will see it here and read it here first the bucs may have pulled off what they set out to do and for very little money…looking forward to a great year! go bucs

T Smith you can’t be serious about Amarri Jackson! That guy is the definition of BUST. He was a bust at USF so I have no idea why the Bucs signed him other than trying to look good for the community. No way he makes the final roster.

Roy:

Your commentary is child-like and lacking any confirmed news. Your perception the Bucs draft and free agency is bizarre. You may have a future writing a gossip blog.

Roy, define doing virtually nothing. We picked up a fine receiver in Free Agency.  A 1000 yard type of impact receiver.  Sure he has baggage, but less baggage than Henry (who you were keen on trading for).  In the draft, we spent our #2 pick on a WR.  Using a 2nd round pick is a big investment for a team, and is reserved for players the team thinks will provide big returns on in the future.  What did you expect the Bucs to do in the draft? Draft 2 WRs?  What did you expect teh Bucs to do in FA?

Posted by  Mitch R, NYC on 05/09  at  08:40 AM

First the Bucs were poised to take Malcolm Kelly with the 20th pick, then they weren’t.  Then they are going to trade for Henry, now they aren’t.  This isn’t journalism, it’s the gossip line.  All we want is some real news.

Posted by  T Smith, Sarasota on 05/09  at  08:19 AM

I like our receivers. I go to all home games. Michael Clayton has talent, has dropped many passes, but he is getting better. He also had the highlight block of the year downfield that sprung Galloway for a TD. Amari Jackson may surprise some people. He has been improving and we really liked his play in high school. I think he’s another Colsten type player with hunger. I also think this team will be so profficient at running the ball, that our receivers will not have to all be downfield threats. I would like to see Zuttah at fullback and Josh Johnson can run like the wind. Michael Clayton’s blocking skills will prove valuable this year in key situations. This offense is being set-up to steamroll defenses with the run.

Posted by  Dan, Titusville,FL on 05/08  at  10:59 PM

I think we should just consintrate on the recievers we have right now. We can still have a great year with the ones we have now.Between next years draft and FA there will be alot of talent available at that possition of
WR.Alot better then this year. That also goes for QBs that should be available. I really think thats whats on the front office of the Bucs are thinking also. This was the year to build the core of your football team (OL,DL,RB,CBs ect…) Next year is the year for (QBs,WRs) We will see how much they improve. Time will tell.

roy weren’t you the one who started this mess about the bucs signing henry? now you write ” no surpise the bucs will not sign henry” please roy just write facts and not tabloid material. you are wrtitng for the tampa tribune not national enquier

Posted by  Mitch R, NYC on 05/08  at  09:01 PM

Kinzer, please enlighten me on where you get your basis that Clayton can’t catch the ball?  80 receptions in his rookie year tells me that he can catch the ball.  Sure, he has some drops, but no more than TO, and I’ve seen Galloway drop some gimme’s too.  Remember that TD vs the Bengals in 2006, that was one hell of a catch.  The point I’m trying to make, get off Clayton’s back.  Sure, he may not be that 80 catch WR anymore, but the man has ability, size and strength.  Let’s see him use it rather than constantly ripping on him.
