TAMPA - There is a downside to being the head coach of an NFL team and Bucs coach Jon Gruden is experiencing that downside right now.
A “huge’’ baseball fan and longtime follower of the Rays, Gruden’s day job will force him to miss most of the Rays-Red Sox American League Championship Series that kicks off tonight at the Trop. He seemed a bit down about that Friday.
“In some ways I’m very disappointed in my inability to keep in touch with reality,’’ Gruden said. “I’m really a big baseball fan. I was a heck of a player once, too. Hit a home run one day. And I’ve been to so many Rays games.
“I think they’re the greatest story in sports. I just hope they can put an exclamation point on what has already been one very exciting year for me and my kids.’’
The Bucs have provided some excitement for Bay area sports fans themselves this year, winning three of their first four games. They’ve dome it largely without their top receiver, who figures to miss yet another game this week.
Joey Galloway, one day after working out mostly on his own, did not participate in the Bucs walkthrough Friday. FB B.J. Askew and QB Brian Griese skipped the walkthrough as well, meaning none of the three will play Sunday.
MLB Barrett Ruud did practice on Friday and Gruden said again that he is optimistic Ruud will be able to play despite nursing a right knee sprain suffered in the loss last week at Denver.

Scott, welfare is spelled “your parents”. Let’s keep it about sports.

Nice post Scott.
The Rays fell victim to excellent Pitching last night. They had opportunities, but couldn’t get to HOME. They should come back strong. Can I have some of the $500 million Pelosi & her Buddies gave to ACORN? Americans are too stupid to even listen to Ron Paul. The truth hurts too much. 4 yrs of Socialism may change opinions, if it isn’t too late. Costa Rica, looking better all the time, except Go Bucs will be No Bucs, but My Bucks won’t be Your Bucks! Work, you lazy scum. Mortgage you can’t pay for, kids you can’t care for, no job. That’s trickle down irresponsibility, the hallmark of the Democratic Party.

Figures a piece of crap Boston fan would sign in here with a has been retard name. What a bunch of trash fans from a trash city. Even trash like Man Ram doesn’t want to be there.
And even more fitting that his political leanings for McCain is nothing more than his has been Captain Kirk fixation and women with annoying as hell accents.

Noglenbecks / wade less, obviously democrats can’t spell, but I would wager a bet that you don’t have any problem spelling “welfare”.

C ‘mon dennycrane. Bashing our team, and last gasp political garble on a sports message board? Have you no better place to spew your last three weeks of hope? Let’s keep it about sports. Gruden is a winner, so don’t wath the game and just read the victory in the newspaper.

DennyCrane, I think Gruden knows a few things about winning super bowls and division titles. That statement is foolish. Additionally we don’t want to hear about your boorish support for the old man and the young bimbo. A GOP honk like you should have voted for Ron Paul, but with such rediculous statements about support for Palin I shouldn’t expect anything less. BTW…I hope the Red Sox lose. Go Rays

Good for Gruden. This is as close to a winning team as he will ever get. He needs to go. And by winning I don’t mean the World Series. That will go to the BoSox.
Go McCaine/Palin
Go BoSox
Good Day to most.
