TAMPA - There is a downside to being the head coach of an NFL team and Bucs coach Jon Gruden is experiencing that downside right now.
A “huge’’ baseball fan and longtime follower of the Rays, Gruden’s day job will force him to miss most of the Rays-Red Sox American League Championship Series that kicks off tonight at the Trop. He seemed a bit down about that Friday.
“In some ways I’m very disappointed in my inability to keep in touch with reality,’’ Gruden said. “I’m really a big baseball fan. I was a heck of a player once, too. Hit a home run one day. And I’ve been to so many Rays games.
“I think they’re the greatest story in sports. I just hope they can put an exclamation point on what has already been one very exciting year for me and my kids.’’
The Bucs have provided some excitement for Bay area sports fans themselves this year, winning three of their first four games. They’ve dome it largely without their top receiver, who figures to miss yet another game this week.
Joey Galloway, one day after working out mostly on his own, did not participate in the Bucs walkthrough Friday. FB B.J. Askew and QB Brian Griese skipped the walkthrough as well, meaning none of the three will play Sunday.
MLB Barrett Ruud did practice on Friday and Gruden said again that he is optimistic Ruud will be able to play despite nursing a right knee sprain suffered in the loss last week at Denver.
