Greg White A Possible No-Show

The possibility of Tampa Bay defensive end Greg White not showing up for training camp on Friday is becoming feasible.

Negotiations between Jack Bechta, White’s agent, and Tampa Bay have apparently hit a wall with neither side able to reach a compromise. With players expected to report for Bucs training camp on Friday, White is currently in danger of missing the opening day of training camp.

“Still working, but no progress,” Bechta wrote Thursday in response to a text message sent by The Tampa Tribune.

When asked what the odds of White showing up on Friday were, Bechta was noncommittal.

“Don’t know? Taking it one day at a time,” Bechta said.

White declined to comment when reached via cell phone on Thursday afternoon.

White is an exclusive-rights free agent, meaning Tampa Bay is the only team that can negotiate with him. The Bucs offered White a contract of $370,000 in February, a slight improvement on the $285,000 base salary he earned last season, when he recorded a team-high eight sacks and led Tampa Bay with seven forced fumbles.

Earlier this week, Bechta said White is seeking a contract equivalent to what a second-round draft pick would receive. Last year, Bucs second-round pick Sabby Piscitelli signed a four-year deal that included guaranteed payouts of more than $1 million.

In addition, Bucs long snapper Andrew Economos, who also was an exclusive-rights free agent, signed a deal this offseason believed to be worth $4 million over five years.

Since he can not negotiate with another team, his only hope is that Tampa Bay pays him more money or trades him. Tampa Bay, a team unsure if White was a one-hit wonder, is not required to do either.

White was not required to show up for Tampa Bay’s offseason conditioning programs since he did not have a contract, but worked out with the team every day since the season ended, plus participated in the Bucs’ minicamp.
