Former Buccaneers DT Jovan Haye Signs With Tennessee

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost an opportunity to sign Albert Haynesworth and just lost DT Jovan Haye to Tennessee.

Haye has just signed with Tennessee and will replace Haynesworth, who recently signed with Washington for $100 million. Terms of Haye’s deal are not available.

“It’s just one of those things where I didn’t get that feeling I would be part of the future,” Haye told The Tampa Tribune Monday evening. “I don’t have any hard feelings. They found me when I was on the practice squad in Cleveland. They gave me a great opportunity to make a name for myself. I will be forever grateful to them. It’s a business and I have to move on, but there are no hard feelings.”

For the last two seasons, Haye has been a key member of Tampa Bay’s defensive line.

He started in 16 games in 2007, compiling 97 tackles and six sacks. Last season, Haye started in 14 games despite battling injuries and had 40 tackles, but more importantly, was a key component in stopping the run.

Tampa Bay seemingly lost interest in Haye after Jim Bates was hired as the new defensive coordinator. Bates wanted defensive tackles who were over 300 pounds, which is why Tampa Bay immediately re-signed Ryan Sims (6-foot-4, 315 pounds), but Haye (6-foot-2, 285 pounds) was too undersized.

Without Haye, Tampa Bay will have to address its desperate need at defensive tackle via free agency or through the draft.
