Following a strong performance at this week’s selection camp, Tampa Prep graduate Chris Colwill of Brandon was named Friday to the U.S. World Cup diving team. The American squad will compete Feb. 19-24 at the same venue that will host the Olympic diving finals in Beijing China.
Colwill earned World Cup spots in his individual event, 3-meter, as well as 3-meter synchronized with teammate Jevon Tarantino of Boca Raton. Despite winning all four their dive lists in synchro and tallying the second-highest scores in 3-meter, Colwill said he was never certain he would be named to the World Cup team.
“It was all up in the air,” said Colwill, now in his senior year at the University of Georgia. “But at the end of the day, I felt I had done the best I could and that was all I wanted.”
The U.S. roster also includes such standouts as 2007 World Championships 10-meter synchro bronze medalists David Boudia and Thomas Finchum, 2000 Olympic gold medalist Laura Wilkinson, and 2000 and 2004 Olympian Troy Dumais. At the World Cup, the U.S. will be looking to six more Olympic berths, having already secured six spots at the 2007 World Championships.
