TAMPA – Michael Clayton is no longer a Buccaneer.
The former Tampa Bay first-round draft pick of the team was released Saturday as the Bucs trimmed their roster to the league-mandated 53-player limit.
“I’m no longer a Buc,’’ Clayton said in a text message to the Tribune.
Though Clayton expressed confidence he would remain with the team through the finl cutdown, the move came as little surprise.
Clayton was coming off his worst season in the NFL and saw little or no playing time in the Bucs last two preseason games.
“It’s cool,’’ Clayton said in a message posted on Twitter. “No hard feelings. We came to an agreement and it is what it is. Now let’s see what’s in store.’‘
In making the move the Bucs swallowed $3 million in guaranteed money owed to Clayton, who never regained his rookie form.
Clayton broke into the league in 2004 and caught 80 passes for 1,193 yards and seven touchdowns, but never caught more than 38 passes again.
He was coming off his worst season, one in which he caught just 16 balls for 230 yards and a touchdown, this after being re-signed to a five-year, $26 million contract.
