This could be a critical week in Michael Clayton’s NFL career.
Tampa Bay’s first-round draft pick in 2004 is in a contract year and Clayton hasn’t made much of an impact since an outstanding rookie season. On Wednesday, the former LSU standout indicated he has been getting starter’s reps in preparation for Sunday’s matchup at Soldier Field.
With WRs Joey Galloway (foot) and Maurice Stovall (neck) injured, Clayton may receive more opportunities in the passing game against the Bears. He was inactive for Week 1 and caught one pass for six yards Sunday against Atlanta.
Clayton has a strong rapport with QB Brian Griese, who started 10 games for the Bucs in 2004, when Clayton caught 80 passes for 1,193 yards and seven TDs.
Because Galloway generally doesn’t practice on Wednesdays, it’s difficult to evaluate whether Clayton’s increased workload during practice will translate to game day. He is anxious to regain his reputation as a dangerous target and Griese already knows what Clayton can do.

I love Gruden. There’s a great contribution for you. What compels people to post such garbage? Serenity now! Serenity now!
Don’t crown the guy a loser until we see what he does. He’s had rough years, generally when he’s been injured or given no opportunities. I know he drops a few. Let’s see what he can do with Griese back before we start talking about getting rid of him. This should be the 1st game in a long time where he actually gets more than a few opportunities.

Staying out of trouble doesn’t win us games, Terry. “At least he doesn’t get in trouble?” That’s the dumbest comment I’ve seen. I’m giving Clayton a chance, but he won’t stay a WR in Tampa if he just stays out of trouble. We need players to play, too. Trouble only matters because Goodell made a major issue of it. This is football where men should be allowed to play unless they are convicted of a despicable act either on the field or off of it. Mack’s a rookie and made one block and got suspended. That wasn’t a dispicable move by him. It was by Goodell, though. Vick, yes. Mack, no. Get it straight Goodell.

I wish for once Clayton would go out and prove me and the other naysayers wrong. Just ONCE in the past 3 years, I’d like to see him go out and bring what he had his rookie season. However, having said that, any time the team has to count on Clayton as their go to guy, they’re in trouble. I sure would like to eat some crow about him Sunday night.

you cant remember the last time a qb was treated like this?garcia and th eagles(takes over for mcnabb goes to playoffs loses not resigned)garcia and the 49ers(garcia takes them to the playoffs loses play there one mor years get injured, bye bye garcia)or the time garcia played for cleveland, got injured didnt make the playoff and is sent to detroit)or the time garcia played for detroit(started 6 games and through twice as many ints than touchdons and was sent to philly).so actually this has happened to garcia several times.probably for a reason.quit the crying.garcia was a chosen pro bowl alternate.i dont think 13tds is exactly probowl material.

You people keep saying Garcia made the Pro-Bowl, he did not he made it because Brett Favre didnt go!!! and yes he took us to the playoffs and what happened? look no knock on the dinosour he can play just not here any more no one other team wants him other wise there would have been a trade in the works or somthing so far nada, and Griese less mobility but far better arm and accuracy so lets give him a shot, and with the running game we might just might take the NFC-S again just maybe.

Michael, I’m pulling for you too. Gruden says you can do it, so prove that you can. If the Bucs cut or traded every player that people on this web site have called for, there would be…? Dungy Coaching, Derrick Brooks, Ronde Barber, John Lynch, Shelton Quarles, Warren Sapp as the entire D line, No QB, No O Line, No GM, No Owner, No Fans because tickets cost too much, & best of all, No Martin, Roy or Ira because nothing to write about. So…Go Lightning!!!

George Hicks, Garcia made the Pro Bowl and took us to the playoffs last year. I need help remembering the last time a QB has been treated this way after a playoff and pro bowl appearance. I havent forgotten what Garcia looked like against the Saints, but we dumped all over him with the contract non-negotiations and the Favre chase. You mentioned Dallas; they are playing at the level we hope to achieve by our sixth game. LOL.

Thanks James Kinzer. All this talk about Clayton has almost made me forget about how much I think Gruden sucks. And we are really hurting for an all around QB that can shoulder the load and be consistent. We dont need greatness, just consistency to go along with the outstanding O line we have now.

The person that wrote this article said that “Griese knows Clayton”! I hope so, that way if he has a choice of who to throw the ball to, it won’t be Clayton! The only reason that Clayton is still here is, Gruden does not want to admit that he made a bad choice 5 years ago on draft day! Clayton Sucks and so does Gruden!!!!!!!!

Iam glad that Tampa will not play Dallas until late in Oct. I hope they are bangup. I really believe that Coach sticken with Griese is a good mood. Mr Garcia has to realize. When he sign the contact last year for two years. If he would only deal with his present contact. If he does good this year then He would be intitle to come back. But if he doesn’t do good, Then we should say bye! bye! Tampa actually won a big game last week. And now we go to Chicago to play the bears. GO BUCS

Its only been 2 games. The passing by Garcia was atrocious. We should have won that game. Griese did a hellava job when he was here before and i dont think that he has reached his true potential. He has a good pedigree. Jackson has speed too. If we can get him involved, that adds an entire new speed threat.

CLAYTON SUCKS! There is no way the Bucs renew this stiff’s contract. I cannot believe they let him hang around this long. Those cheap Leprachauns must have wanted every bit of work out of him (which aint much) that they could get since they shelled out so much gelt for him.

oh boyyy…get ready for drop fest

Put his out there and just see if he can still do it. IF NOT then cut him. Give his a chance at least. Why do you think players do so good when they get traded? they get a chance, that is usually why.

Tony,
Good point about training camp. Clayton’s performance in camp and practice has likely been a big part of why he’s still around here. I disagree a bit on the Bryant comment though. He hasn’t dropped nearly as many passes as you think. It usually takes a second look to see, but most of what appear to be dropped passes have actually been knocked down by coverage. Not much a WR can do in those situations besides get more separation. It was just good coverage.

Remember everyone that this YOUNG MAN was rookie of the year. In that year he looked like keyshawn Johnson. He just needs to get his confidence back. Remember who was throwing all those passes to him that year? Thats right, Brian Griese. I think these 2 might just shine and impress alot of people including their peers. Then we get Galloway and stoval healthy. LOOKOUT!
Go Michael GO!!!!

Clayton made some outstanding catches late last season early into those games, then disappeared the rest of the 3-4 games he was played. Hmmm, sounds familiar, kind of like how Gruden treated Alstot for years. Clayton may not be a great receiver, but he’s certainly capable of being a go-to guy again. Hope he makes the most of his opportunity.

His primary problems has been he’s taking his eyes off the ball to start running downfield or he lets the ball get into his body. If he would just catch the ball first with his hands, everything else will take care of itself. Have to go get my eyes checked now after trying to read the word in the image. GEEESH.

i seen so much out of him in training camp he just needs to display that on the field on sundays hes got talent we have all seen it its about time he uses it i say let him start bryant has already dropped more passes in 2 games than he did his whole career we need this guy if he starts you never know what kind of confidence that could give him go clayton put your gameface on and put up or shut-up heres your chance to shine!

Seattle is desperate for recievers..maybe the bucs are going to show him off a bit to trade him
Posted by Mike, Tampa on 09/17 at 01:20 PM
Well, Just make sure you need to watch the football before catch it!. Dont worry about the trash talking. Just do it and play well against Chicago!.
Posted by Terry Taylor, Tampa, FL on 09/17 at 01:18 PM
We couldn’t even trade Clayton. Yes he is a good blocker downfield, but he is slow and I dont even consider him a possession receiver. It sucks because he was so good in college and as a rookie. He’s just one of the many WRs out there and he will probably play his last professional game in Tampa. Atleast he stays out of trouble.

Here’s your chance Michael. Make something of it.
