Tampa Bay has shown interest in former Detroit and Oakland receiver Mike Williams and there is an outside chance he could be signed.
Williams worked out for Tennessee on Tuesday, but Tampa Bay remains one of the teams interested his services.
“I believe real interest exists ... to what extent, I am not sure,” said Sean Kiernan, Williams’ agent, via e-mail on Wednesday.
Bucs GM Bruce Allen did confirm the contact, but when asked if there was a possibility of signing Williams, he said “No, not now.”
Williams, a former Tampa Plant High and USC standout receiver, was selected 10th overall by the Lions in the 2005 draft. He never lived up to expectations in Detroit, catching only 37 passes for 449 yards and two touchdowns in two seasons. The Raiders acquired him in April.
In Oakland, Williams had seven catches for 90 yards in six games with the Raiders, but was released because he dropped a key pass late in a 13-9 loss at Tennessee.
The Raiders drove to the Titans’ 30 with 1:21 left in the game when Daunte Culpepper threw a 4th-and-14 pass to Williams at the first-down marker. Williams turned to run with the ball before he made the catch, though, and the incompletion ended the comeback bid.
“The word ‘pleased’ isn’t anywhere near Mike Williams right now,” Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said after the game.
Bucs coach Jon Gruden loved Williams coming out of USC, but with WR Michael Clayton returning from his ankle injury next week, coupled with the emergence of Maurice Stovall, Tampa Bay may not need his help.
“We have spoken with the Bucs, but nothing has been determined yet,” Kiernan said.

I like the idea of bringing in Mike Williams…is he better than the 5th WR on the roster? Yes…so its a no-brainer at the right price. Plus, if he jumps on the “After Practice” regimen that Clayton and Stovall are on, then he may turn his career around with re-enforced fundamentals…it was working for Clayton IMVHO

I think it would be really great bringing in Mike Williams another high draft choice that Tampa almost drafted. If he does sign a contact, he should not thinking about this year but look to next year, Because Clayton
may not be back next year. I think it would be a nice pickup without waisting a high draft choice on him, Also picking up Michael Bennett is a plus also.

tampa kid who thought he would have been drafted by the bucs may now show his “real” potential if he is able to play for the team he’s been dying to play for! sign him jon, sign him now and trade clayton to the raiders! do it and do it now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m an L.A. guy, so I had the misfortune of living through the USC-hype of the last 5 years. By the way, I’m a UCLA alumni, so I hate SC. What I can tell you about Mike Williams is this:
He, like most other USC players, were college-studs and pro-duds [with a few exceptions]. As far as him personally, hes got the big-body that everybody loves, but ZERO speed - some TEs are faster than him. He has marginal hands, terrible route-running, and no heart. All that said, maybe what he needs is a fresh start with no hype and no expectations. If we could sign him for something like league-minimum, it would be worth it. Anything more is just a waste of money.

I have to admit I was really wrong about this guy. He looked to me, coming out in the draft to be one of the best looking Pro prospects I’d seen. I was upset when the Bucs didn’t get him. But performance doesn’t lie. He’s another bust, ala Cadillac Williams. Maybe they’re related.

There is something up with this kid.
Nobody disputes his physical talents, but why has he had so many problems. He had problems in Detroit for showing up on time, and at times at all. I do however beleive that a move back home is the best chance the kid has to put it all together.
I think best option, if he is willing, is to bring him in and put him on the practice squad and give him a full go try out during the off season and training camp. Some time at home may let him get his head on straight. Bringing him in now would make his head explode trying to learn Gruden’s Chinese.

Maybe returning home will motivate him to work harder. Also, playing for a team that may be headed for the playoffs can be a motivating factor.

i watched this guy all preseason and into the regular season (when they weren’t blacked out locally) and he was like the guy at usc…the raiders loved him and bragged about how they stole him from the lions…what happened at the end isn’t known..which is typical for the raiders…partly the re-birth of jerry porter…this is one tire with some tread still left on it…as a third wr he’d be terrific…no b.s., the guy’s good..

The simple question, is he better than Chaz Gessner….or whoever our 5th guys is behind Joey, Ike, Michael, and Maurice…..ummm…got to think YES! I remember the hype and bought it from USC. Think he would do well in pewter.

He has been dropped twice because he is said to be overweight and unmotivated. Besides, we haven’t had much luck with ex Raiders.
If we do bring him in, I’d say make him a TE and make him work twice as hard as everyone else to stay on the team.

Teach him how to block a little and turn him into a TE.

We have enough slow receiver-galloway is the only fast receiver. If you want to give someone a chance give Antonio Bryant a chance.Signing Williams is like bringing sand to a beach!

I think bringing him in could do nothing but help the team.. Lets go ahead and give him a chance… who knows… Maybe he is the spark we need.

we have done a pretty good job of taking former number 1s and helping to turn their career around. That word potential is always there and thats what makes a first rounder. Maybe we are the revitalizing piece to help him out.

I say bring him in as a project. It’s not going to cost anything and maybe he’ll start working real hard and become a good player again. It’s worth a shot.

they should definetly bring him in. he shows alot of potential and is a great target in the red zone. sign him to the practice squad and let him battle with the other young recievers for a spot. teams looks great going into the buy week, this would be a great time to bring him in and get extra practice before making any decisions.
Go Bucs!

I think you should bring him in, I have watched college and pro football for years and I think he is much better than the 5th receiver and if you just bring him back to the fundamentals and get him the ball, he will do great things.
