B.J. Never Considered Holdout

Tampa Bay FB B.J. Askew may have the secret formula necessary to renegotiate a contract with GM Bruce Allen - don’t say a word.

Bucs QB Jeff Garcia has hinted toward holding out if he does not have a new contract in place soon, RB Earnest Graham is voicing his contract displeasure by not showing up for voluntary team offseason workouts, while DE Greg White wants Tampa Bay to extend him a better contract.

However, Askew never voiced his concerns and was recently rewarded with a contract extension. The deal brought the total value of Askew’s contract to $8.6 million and called for the six-year veteran to receive $2.2 million in guaranteed payouts, including a $2 million signing bonus. It also should keep Askew in a Bucs uniform through the 2012 season.

“All I can really ask the guys [who want better contracts] is to just show up. Keep working out,” Askew said. “The theory behind it all is you hold out, you do all these things, and then all of a sudden the team will reward you. Me and my agent had a long talk about it, and I even went up and told Coach [Jon] Gruden that I’m not going to sit out and I’m not going to miss any time.

“I wanted it [new deal] done, but I just had to let him know that it wasn’t the route I was going. I told him I really appreciated him and I just kept working. I knew it would take care of itself.”
