A Guide to Favremania

There are endless reports flying about the latest developments in the Brett Favre saga, many of them conflicting accounts, so let’s set the record straight.

Here are some of the things we know for sure at this point:

1. Favre won’t be playing for the Packers.
How many times does Green Bay have to state its intentions to go with Aaron Rodgers? Favre fans in Wisconsin may not like it, but the Packers don’t want No. 4 to take another snap for them.

2. Favre won’t be released.
At least the Packers can control where Favre ends up, assuming he insists on playing this fall. They own his rights, and they’d be irresponsible to make him an unrestricted free agent and have him end up with a team of his choosing, like NFC North rivals Minnesota or Chicago. You don’t give up an asset of this magnitude and get nothing in return.

3. The Bucs are interested.
Jeff Garcia already has a fragile psyche regarding Tampa Bay’s commitment to him. If you had no intentions to pursue another starting quarterback, why would you let the Favre-to-Tampa speculation reach this level and further erode Garcia’s confidence? Jon Gruden and Bruce Allen can stop the rumors right now by saying they are passing on Brett Favre. Other teams, including the Packers, have no qualms about saying exactly that.

4. The Glazer factor is strong.
The Glazers don’t interfere often in football matters, but the prospect of Favre wearing pewter is intriguing to Tampa Bay’s owners, especially with the Super Bowl coming to town in six months. Besides his obvious football skills, Favre would create an instant merchandising and marketing buzz in Tampa Bay. The Glazers appreciate star quality (see Gruden 2002) and they don’t come bigger than No. 4.

5. If Favre arrives, Garcia goes.
Garcia has been a good starting quarterback in the NFL, but making him a backup to Favre doesn’t work. That scenario would potentially divide the locker room and Garcia wouldn’t mask his frustrations well. He would need to move on, possibly to a Minnesota or Chicago, and the Bucs could recoup part of the compensation they give up for Favre.
