Alonso hosting summer basketball camp

Alonso High will hold a summer basketball camp for boys and girls ages 7-14.  The camp is divided into three practice weeks, June 17-July 11. The price is $125 per week. The Ravens Basketball Practice, designed for higher levels of instruction, takes place July 15-18; 8-10 a.m. for ages 9-11 and 11a.m.-1:30 p.m. for ages 12-14. Cost is $75 per week. Access for Student Athletes Coalition supports legislation to amend FHSAA

A set of bills sponsored by two state politicians that would amend investigations conducted by the Florida High School Athletic Association has gained a new supporter.

The Access for Student Athletes Coalition, a new initiative launched by Floridians for Government Accountability, Inc., announced its support for the bills on Wednesday, which aim to safeguard student-athletes from investigations.

The Coalition commended the passage of House Bill 1279, which is being sponsored by State Rep. Larry Metz, R-Yalah.

“For years, the FHSAA has turned their opposition to change into successful spin that their main goal is to instill fairness and protect the integrity of high school athletics,” said Jim Hart, chairman of Floridians for Government Accountability, Inc. in a release. “But, the real story here is about an organization that has instilled fear and has bullied the very children we are trying to teach to be strong and be kind to others. Parents with complaints of intimidation, biased questioning, and unwarranted assumptions of guilt continue to see their complaints go unanswered or even ignored.”

The bills would force the FHSAA to bear the burden of investigation expenses, which were typically billed to the offending school. House Bill 1279, sponsored by Metz, would not only implement a law stating the FHSAA must demonstrate convincing evidence of the student’s ineligibility, but would permit a judge to issue the final order. The Senate version, SB 1164, is being sponsored by Sen. Kelli Stargel, R-Lakeland.

If the judge finds the student eligible, all costs and attorney fees would be absorbed by the FHSAA.



Freedom’s Donohoe offering youth foootball camp

Freedom High head football coach Todd Donohoe is offering a youth “TD Football Camp” for kids ages 6-14 this summer at the New Tampa Community Park.

The camp will be directed by Donohoe with instructions and training focused on fundamentals. Donohoe will be assisted by other local high school coaches. The camp will run four days from July 23-26 from 6-8 p.m. at the park, located at 17302 Commerce Park Blvd.

The cost for the four-day session is $80 per camper while day campers are welcome at a daily rate of $25. Donorhoe is also looking for parents to assist with registration at the park July 23 at 5:20 p.m.

Lutz Blue advances

TAMPA—The Lutz Blue team used the strong overall performance of Michael Bean to defeat Land O’Lakes 7-2 in the semifinal of the 10/11 year old baseball in District 25 Little League all star action Monday night at North Seminole Little League.

Bean pitched five innings for Lutz, only allowing three base hits while strking out seven batters. At the plate, Bean had three hits and two RBIs and also scored two runs.

Lutz Blue jumped on Land O’Lakes in the first inning as Daniel Batista roped a single to left to score a run, and two batter later, Casey Nouss knocked in two runs with a double for a 3-0 first inning lead.

In the top of the third, the Lutz Blue doubled their lead. Nouss scored from third on a wild pitch, and later in the inning, Bean’s two out double plated two runs to make it 6-0, Lutz Blue.

Land O’Lakes cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth, Russell Holland hit a solo homer to left center, but that would be as close as Bean and Bautista, who pitched the bottom of the sixth, held them at bay.

Lutz Blue will play next in the championship game Friday night at 7:15 and will face either Land O’Lakes, New Tampa, or Zephyrhills.



SEBA hosting boys, girls basketball showcase

The Southeast Basketball Academy (SEBA) will host a showcase for boys and girls basketball players in the area. The SEBA/Under Armour Basketball Showcase will take place Sept. 10 for girls and Sept. 17 for boys at Tampa Prep between 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Cost is $95.

Players will participate in drills and play in 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 games in front of coaches from Division II, III, NAIA and junior college programs.
