Zephyrhills athletic director Bruce Cimorelli told the Tampa Tribune on Thursday afternoon that the school has hired former Wesley Chapel girls basketball coach Shawn Brown to coach the boys soccer team.
Brown was 15-11 in one season for the Wildcats, but resigned July 18 because he was laid off from his job at the East Pasco Family YMCA and needed a job that wasn’t purely supplemental.
Brown said that decision was solely family based, that it had nothing to do with administration and he looked at every option to stay on as coach. Brown added he was looking forward to coaching standout junior guard Tiffany Echevarria, who had a breakout sophomore season, averaging 8.8 points per game, 2.3 assists per game and scored 158 points, second most on the team.
“Well, I got a teaching job — actually I’m the ISS coordinator at Stuart Middle School — but if I had known I’d be getting this job I probably wouldn’t have resigned at Wesley Chapel,” Brown said. “However, this situation is working out well now and I’m closer to my son, who goes to Stuart, so I’m just going with the flow and looking out for my family and hope everything works out for the best.”
Brown, who has experience coaching soccer when he was youth sports director at the East Pasco YMCA and also coaches the football team at Stuart, will take over a Bulldogs team that has struggled the past two seasons, even in the 2009-10 season when former girls soccer player, DeeDee Castro, took over the boys teams, but resigned after just one season to pursue her masters and an assistant principal position.
