Last Thursday, Zephyrhills football coach Reggie Roberts was announced as a Tampa Bay Buccaneers Coach Of The Week for the week of Oct. 21. Roberts didn’t receive the honor until Nov. 3 because of the Bucs bye week and trip to play in London.
Roberts, who played linebacker for Zephyrhills, visited One Buc Place with his wife, Deborah, and players Jamal Roberts, Jake Smith, Adrian Sanchez and Jacob McLaughlin, received $1,000 for the football program and will be selected from the 10 weekly winners at the end of the season. Roberts is the second Pasco County coach to win the award this season, with River Ridge’s Ryan Benjamin, who was part of the Buccaneers 2002 Super Bowl team, picking up the award in the season’s opening week after his alma mater defeated Fivay 17-14 on Sept. 2.
“One of the greatest moments of my life was playing football at Zephyrhills High School, and to return is a dream come true,” Roberts said on the Buccaneers Web site. “I came back to give back. I had a lot of good jobs before this, but this is a dream job. It’s just awesome to return to Zephyrhills High School.”
Roberts, in just his second season, receives the award after the Bulldogs 49-0 win over Ridgewood on Oct. 21, but was also selected because of Zephyrhills’ remarkable turnaround that includes a five-game winning streak in district play after opening the season 0-2 and made the Bulldogs a Class 5A-District 6 contender until back-to-back losses to Fivay and Pasco, respectively. After the program had just four wins in the past two seasons, it is now 5-4 with it’s season-finale against the winless Wiregrass Ranch this Friday.
