PITTSBURGH—We already knew Willy Aybar would play second in Aki Iwamura’s three-game absence. Today we found out who will move to the top of the lineup: B.J. Upton.
Joe Maddon approached Upton last night about moving up to the top of the order and “it was a pretty quick answer for me,” said the center fielder.
“I’ve always kind of liked the leadoff spot,” Upton said.
Upton shouldn’t have to change much. He has some nifty leadoff-type numbers this season: .401 on-base percentage, 56 walks (2nd in AL) and 22 steals (3rd in AL).
Here’s the whole group, with the red-hot Evan Longoria also moving up:
Upton CF
Crawford LF
Longoria 3B
Hinske RF
Pena 1B
Navarro C
Aybar 2B
Bartlett SS

UPTON HAS THE NUMBERS FOR THE RAYS BEST LEADOFF MAN BUT WHEN AKI COMES BACK I KIND OF HATE TO SEE HIM AT NO.9 <> EITHER WAY IT IS A GOOD FIT <> AYBAR WILL MAKE A GOOD [DH] AS A SWITCH HITTER <> YOU CAN SAY WE HAVE STILL NOT HIT ON ALL CYLINDERS TILL PENA MAKES BETTER CONTACT <> THE TEAM SEEMS TO KEEP IMPROVING AND HOW ABOUT THE RELEIVER ... GRANT BALFOUR !!! TIME FOR THE SOX TO SLIDE DOWN SOME !!!

The 2008 Rays team have all the necessities to win it all and this year
with just a few tweeks.
I need to get these tweeks to someone of action that will see they get put into play.
1) The math of a full hand choked bat swung lightly will beat Wakefields knuckle ball, Jason Bartlett is the only Ray that chokes his bat and look at his contact count.
2) A run each inning will win most games, how many times have I said if I had that double play out back I sure as hell would bunt.
3) It is much easier to run to it than after it.
4) A hand choked bat hit is better than a 1000 full bat strike outs.
