Your Lasting Memory of Jim Leavitt

Posted Jan 8, 2010 by Scott Carter

Hey, most of TBO.com’s daily coverage of the Jim Leavitt firing will be posted on the regular TBO.com sports site rather than my blog.

We know Carl Franks is interim coach and that all the current assistants remain employed. The new head coach will have full control in picking his own staff.

The list of early candidates: Tommy Tuberville, Tommy Bowden, Calvin Magee, Dan McCarney. A couple other potential candidates include Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora and Bucs assistant coach Rich Bassacia. A long shot might be North Alabama coach Terry Bowden, who is itching to get back to a D-I school. However, if brother Tommy is interested, he might not be the top Bowden on the list.

What’s your final memory going to be of Jim Leavitt’s impact on the program? Will you remember the good times, or the way his career at USF ended?

Would love either Bowden or Tubs

Don’t like McCarney, Magee, Fedora or Bassacia

Scott, could old BC coach Jagz or Fulmer be possibilities?

While I greatly appreciate how far he has taken this program, sadly I will always remember this incident as his memory.

My favorite Leavitt memory was after the Mieneke Car Care bowl a few years back.  I was a student then and managed to sneak into the big USF new years bash that cost a fortune (to a broke college student).

Leavitt made his rounds and personally meeting every person in attendance.  He came and Bull shat with us for 10 mins or so and was genuinely a great guy.  We even got a laugh out f him when we asked if he thought about putting in Brandon Baker (punter) in at QB after he threw a beautiful fake punt pass to get a first down.  He laughed and said something along the lines of, “You know, I had been thinking about that.” and laughed.

What a great guy.  I’ll miss him as head coach and hope he gets treated fairly on his way out.  I’d like to see Leavitt back around USF football games in the stands one day.  It’s sad for it to end this way.

Good luck to the new coach.  I hope he brings USF to new heights.  As Leavitt leaves USF football far better off than he found it, or built it rather.

I’m sure there are a lot of people waiting for me to eat crow about Leavitt and this incident. At the end of the day, I try to consider people to be innocent until proven guilty.

I read the whole report, and it appears that Leavitt acted outside USF policy and deserved to be fired.

Most, if not all, of what McMurphy and Erskin said and wrote appears to have been well founded. Duemig appears to have had good soucres in his radio reporting of the basics of this story as well. I apologize to them.

Today is a sad day for USF, so grieve well; tomorrow let’s begin the next chapter in our goal to become a great football team. I think we have all had quite enough of this story.

My best memory of Jim Leavitt? There are too many to mention. USF’s first win against Kentucky Wesleyan, at the old sombrero. Beating West Virginia when they were ranked. Beating Pittsburgh at Pittsburgh. New Year’s Eve in Charlotte. The first USF players drafted into the NFL. USF football players getting Super Bowl rings as part of the New England Patriots. The opening of the new athletic center. Having coach sign a souvenir ball.

Taking nothing but a dream of an idea and turning it into a good football team with great facilities and unlimited potential - that is his legacy.

Dan….no need to eat crow.  We all take sides everyday.

Like you said, we have had enough of this story and now is time to unite as an alumni and fan base.

Now lets hope we get a good guy.

I’ll take, in order:

Terry Bowden
Jagz
Fulmer
Tommy Bowden
Peterson
Holtz

I will say this….to those who bad-mouthed McMurphy as being a liar and a fabricator only out to destroy the program, I hope they all do the right thing and provide him with the proper crdibility he deserves for getting the story right.

any idea of what these guys will require in the way of a salary, and what about Tuberville? TT had a heckuva run at Auburn and Mississippi

Heard on 620 that Fulmer has already inquired about the job…..that’s what we need “big fish” with BCS experience (championship a bonus)

Hector,
McMurphy may not be a liar, but he has been salivating over the opportunity to take down USF for a long time.  His hatred of CJL was always apparent in his slanted articles.  I know in my heart that he tried to dig up dirt on USF at every chance he could get.

Well kudos to McMurphy.  He’s finally gotten CJL fired.  Now that his mission has been accomplished what else will he have to write about?  Probably nothing of interest.

I will remember CJL as a great architect and someone who was always loyal to USF.  I’ll remember his bloodied foreheads coming out of the locker room at halftime.  I’ll remember all of the milestones that he lead this team to.

It’s a shame that he was fired over something like this.  Someone that has done so much for a team shouldn’t go out like this.  Kinda reminds me of Tony Dungy leaving One Buc in the dark, rainy night after building such a powerhouse.  I hope that CJL lands on his feet like Tony did.

Thank you for the great memories Coach, you’ll be sorely missed.  Could be time for me to move on as well.

When some time has passed, I think that I’ll most remember Leavitt for the early years. Those battles with perennial 1-AA powers like Georgia Southern, and that 2003 season when we won 3 double-overtime games. Those were really Leavitt’s glory years.

Like I’ve said before, I think this change will ultimately be good for the University and the program, but it is a shame that it had to happen like this.

Guys, you know that I didnt like Leavitt and I explained why on this blog many times.  The early days were indeed exciting times for USF, but Leavitt became arrogant and he felt that he was more important than anyone at USF. When being interviewed, he was a poor spokesman for USF and was nearly unintelligible most times.  I’ve also learned something else about that man in the last week or so from a very reliable source, and while I won’t get into it here, trust me, you’ll be glad USF rid itself of this man that feigned character and values, but had none. Tuberville, Fulmer, Terry Bowden and Skip Holtz are my top candicates.

My greatest memory of Jim is what everyone refers to as his “antics”. I never saw antics only passion and pride for his university. I have never been more proud to be a bull than when I looked down on the field each game to see my coach running wind sprints and later leading the team on the field.

I’ll remember so many successes over so many years.

Like some others here, I suspect the program will be the better for this, but I’m sad at how it happened.

Hey folks, thanks for sharing some memories of Leavitt. He obviously had an impact on USF that won’t be soon forgotten, good and bad depending on your view.

Once the dust settles, I’m sure passionate USF fans will reflect mostly on the success of the program under Leavitt. I’ll be very interested to see if he lands another coaching job.
