Q: Roy and Ira, it’s obvious the Bucs will focus on speed for the offense in the draft and via free agency. But do you think the Bucs will address their defensive needs as well (defensive line, cornerback)?—Tyler Durden, Lutz
A: A young corner is definitely a priority for the Bucs, given the mileage on Barber and Kelly. The D-line will get younger because Spires won’t be back, but more depth is needed up front. I would expect they will draft a CB within the first two rounds.

Kelly can’t opt out as far as I’ve heard. He is signed. And per the Bucs/Allen’s policy, u can bet he’ll play out that contract, even if he doesn’t report till Nov 8th and pays a big fine.
Cody, don’t give up ur day job to become a scout
Penn is a above average pass protector (although green). He is average at best in his run blocking.
Starks would b a great fit (on almost any team). As for Bryant Johnson, I never saw anything special in him. He clearly wasn’t as good as either of his two special brethren. Just because a guy is a 1st rounder doesn’t make him great… See Micheal, Clayton
Heheee

I also heard that Kelly will opt out of his contract but he is a cover-2 CB.He can’t man up on a Wr-if you notice during the season how far he plays back.
I listened to Cummings and Lucas talk about who the bucs was scouting at the senior bowl.QUARTERBACKS-Woodson from kentucky and Flacco from Delaware.I watched Flacco play and that guy has a big arm. They alo was looking at tight ends-thats odd.

If we go after Shaun Rodgers I hope the guy agrees to lose some weight. I read somewhere that during this last year he gained like 30 or 40 pounds and it showed cause he totally disapeared for the Lions the second half of the season.
But..if the Bucs coaching staff can get him to go hard every down, the guy is freakin unstoppable.
I agree with releasing all of those guys Dex, except for Carter. I think he comes cheap amd our young d-linemen can learn some things from him yet.

I agree with you Dex that this is a very important Free Agency period for us. And I do agree that Max Starks would be a pretty good pick-up if we could get him.
I heard that Brian Kelly is opting to buy out of his contract. Does anybody know if this is true?

In my opinion,Graham showed the bucs that we needed a back that can catch and pass block.Caddy was only good for 1&2nd down.Bryant Johnson would be a great sign.On defense,a Justin Smith or Jared Allen.I also think its time to release Kelly-to many injuries.
Berrian will ask for to much money-he’s worth it,he is such a down field threat. We cannot go into next season with Hillard at the #2 WR.Shaun Rodgers will be release from the Lions and the bucs should be there waiting for him.I think Carter,Spires,Bennett,Kelly and Clayton will be release to free up some more money.

Yea, Dex, Max Starks is it? He would be great. If we got him then I’d say still sign a WR and draft a RB like Jaamal Charles I think it is out of Texas. Caddy won’t be the same next year and even if he is the same, would he be the starter over Graham?

Cody, when i brought up Al Harris i was referring to Donald Penn.I was saying he could turn out to be good-you forget the DE’s he went up against and did a hell of a job. With that said,i was responding to what Greg wrote stating Penn was not long term.
We have a shot at signing Starks if we pay him.Remember Steve Hutchin, top guard in the NFL,played for the Seahawks, was the anchor for that running game.Where is he now-Vikings!If the bucs want to improve that line they will put up the money.I don’t know if you follow college football but our pic isn’t bad because most of the top players are defense.
Cody, can we agree that this free agency is very important for us?
Posted by Cody Ubben, Cedar Falls, IA on 01/26 at 10:01 PM
Where in my posts did I say that we had tons of weapons to throw to? Never said that.
Dex, what makes you think the Steelers are going to let Max Starks just walk away. Free agency doesn’t start until March 1st. A lot of free agents get signed by their teams before then.
What does the 1997 draft and Al Harris have to do with anything?
I’m not argueing that we don’t need playmakers. My point is that we shouldn’t draft a receiver or a running back that has no right being taken at the 20th pick in the 1st round. If we want a receiver that can have an immediate impact I think we should look FA or trade for someone that is proven in the NFL already.
Posted by Dex fields, neptune,n.j. on 01/26 at 10:48 AM
Right now we do not know if Penn is long term but he could be.In the 1997 draft we draft a CB named Al Harris that turned out to be long term.
You want to talk long term-Max Starks,a free agent tackle of the steelers will be there. At 6’7 337,he is consider a top teir left tackle and is only 25.Spend money on this guy!
Bring in guys like DJ Hackett and Bryant Johnson.Put Clayton at fourth receiver and draft Jamaal Charles with that second or third pic-don’t forget about this guy,4.3 forty, 6’0 200lbs RB.

I’m saying why would you use your first pic on a lineman when that was not our problem last season. We lack play maker, speed on offense, and explosive player. In the playoff game against the gaints that left side played strong-if anything we need a better o-line coach.
Cadillac is not a play maker,he will never be as good as that first season. How long can Galloway do this-he is the only speed on offense-you shut him down there is no offense(REMEMBER THE GAINTS GAME).Look at our dept at WR and ask yourself why is Hillard our #2 receiver and he has no speed.
Cody we do not have a $$ load of weapons to throw to,what football are you watching.

Hey Dex, put in an application in Detroit. You just may be the next Matt Millen. Get an a$$ load of offensive weapons that you can’t get the ball to.
Horrible O-line = QB on his a$$ = the ball not getting to your high dollar offensive weapons
Have you not been paying attention to the NFL lately. Rookie o-linemen are starting and doing well.
Give the QB one more second in the pocket and thats one more second for a receiver to get open.

besides left tackles and defensive ends are the highest paid players in the league and they would eat up any cap space we had - also you never see high end LT or DE hitting the free agent market - and thus that’s why most teams end up developing their own talent at those positions through the draft.
Posted by Greg M, Tampa, FL on 01/25 at 07:00 PM
Hey I’m not saying any left tackle we draft has to start - we still have Petitgout and Penn but they aren’t long term solutions. As for playmakers, Galloway, Cadillac, Stevens, Smith, Graham that’s some pretty good darn depth - plus Clayton looked good at the end of the year, Stovall and Paris Warren should be back next year and he looked awesome last preseason. I still think the Bucs should go out and sign a wide receiever like DJ Hackett or Bryant Johnson (Berrian would be great but I doubt he’ll be available) - I don’t see the use in drafting a WR this year I’d be calling up Denver and seeing if they’d take a 3rd or 4th rd pick for Javon Walker who I heard they won’t be bringing back anyway.

So putting another rookie on the line make a alot of sense. We play tougher teams this season and we should draft another lineman instead of signing one out of free agency.CODY-what fire power? That was the problem last season-no fire power.I can’t believe Greg said we have play makers!WHO!
Posted by Greg M, Tampa, FL on 01/25 at 03:21 PM
Cody’s right - we do need a stud left tackle and you are never going to find one on the free agent market because teams know they are too valuable and rare to let go - however the Bucs shouldn’t reach at any one position in the draft just take the best OT, DT, CB available when we draft - this team has play makers we just need better pass protection - besides it isn’t like there are usually a bunch of top playmakers available around the time when we’ll be picking.
Posted by You Know Who, Largo, FL on 01/25 at 02:29 PM
Yea, look what Joe Thomas has done for the Browns. A stud left tackle should be the Bucs priority in the draft, especially since we have the 20th pick. The safest bet in the late first round is a LT. For FA, the Bucs should go after Marcus Trufant and let injury prone Kelly walk. Then, Andre Johnson would be a great addition for the PR and KR game, plus a solid option for the no. 3 WR slot. Bernard Berrian would also be a great addition to be the future no. 1 WR and the current no. 2 WR. If the Bucs really want to polish their DL then Jared Allen should be the guy. I would be glad if we could pick up any two of the aforementioned FA’s. Go Bucs!

Then it’s a good thing you’re not in charge of our personel decisions Dex. It all starts with the O and D-lines, if you can’t figure that out then I don’t know what to tell you. You can have all the fire power in the world on offense but if you can’t keep your QB on his feet it doesn’t matter.
Luke Petitgout - very injury prone, Giants released him for a reason
Donald Penn - Good back-up, good run blocking, crapy pass blocking

CODY! CODY!Are you kidding?Bad as it is that we do not have a play maker on this offense and you would say draft a tackle. Is anybody reading this?I would draft Rivers-a outside linebacker from USC,I would draft a DE,or even a RB-BUT A TACKLE!TACKLE? TACKLE!
Posted by Cody Ubben, Cedar Falls, IA on 01/24 at 05:45 PM
Do not draft a corner in the 1st or 2nd round and do not go after Asante Samuel. James, NJ has the right guy. Nnamdi Asomugha is the guy we need to be going after. I hope the Raiders aren’t smart enough to get this guy signed to a deal before FA starts.
It’s gonna be boring but we need to draft a Left Tackle and a 3-Tech in the first 2 rounds. Then in the 3rd round we go with either a CB or WR, which ever has the most value on our draft board.
Posted by Greg M, Tampa, FL on 01/24 at 03:15 PM
Charles? a second round pick and Chris Simms for the 1st overall pick - dude do you even know anything about football or how the draft works? - in order to get the first overall pick the Bucs would probably have to take their 1st and 2nd round picks from this year and next year.
Posted by charles fiske, kc, mo on 01/24 at 01:42 PM
What about amante samual. Isn’t he an unrestricted free agent this year? Also Miami said its listening to offers for the 1st pick. What about offering Simms and a 2nd round pick for it. Dorsey would fit into our defense perfectly.
Posted by James, NJ on 01/24 at 09:15 AM
Nnamdi Asomugha, one of the best CBs in the game, is a UFA and was drafted by Bruce Allen in the 1st round of 2003 while he was still with the Raiders.
Posted by Jose Enrique, Ft Myers on 01/24 at 06:26 AM
You can find a corner at any round, but a true “shut down” corner is normally either a first round studd or you are going to need years to develop them in your system.
Posted by Rodney Smith, Ft. Dix, NJ on 01/23 at 08:47 PM
I think the BUCS should pick up a WR/KR in the first round. Joey can’t do it by himself. He needs someone to help spread the defense. We never had a real threat on KR/PR so that is a big need. A CB is a good 2nd round pick.

I will sill take Bryant Johnson over Clayton at the 3rd receiver-put Clayton at the 4th spot.At least Johnson can get down field faster than our receiver-except Galloway.
