A Look At The College Football Landscape: |

The first E-mail arrived at 10:09 Saturday night. It was short and to the point:
Mr. McMurphy,
I would like you to consider the University of Utah for this year’s AP National Champion. They are the only undefeated team in the nation. They have beaten two team [sic] in the top ten (Alabama and TCU) and two other teams in the top 25 (BYU and Oregon St). Without a playoff, this is the only way that this group can receive the recognition they deserve. Thank you for your time.

As a voter in the Associated Press football poll, I routinely get E-mails from SIDs promoting their teams/players for various awards. But usually not many from fans pleading/begging/asking for my vote. That all changed after Utah beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.
My second “vote for Utah” E-mail arrived at 10:27 Saturday night. At last count this afternoon, I think I had surpassed 50 E-mails from Utah fans from all over the country. They all listed their reasons why undefeated Utah should be ranked No. 1. Some had valid points, some not-so-valid.
The good news for Utes fans: I read every one of your E-mails. The bad news: they won’t influence my vote in the final AP poll (By the way, I had Utah ranked No. 5 and Alabama No. 6 before the Sugar Bowl). And, before any one asks, I haven’t determined already how I will vote if Team A beats Team B in the remaining bowls by a last second field goal or by 50 points. I’ll wait until all the bowls are played and then fill out my ballot.
Here was my Top 10 ballot after the league conference championships were completed.
1. Texas
2. Florida
3. Oklahoma
4. USC
5. Utah
6. Alabama
7. Texas Tech
8. Boise State
9. Penn State
10. Ohio State

“Wrong conference” above is irrelevant. I don’t see any conferences ranked in the top 25—only teams. Therefore, “Great team, awesome season” is the only relevant comment. Did you even watch Utah dominate Alabama? Utah could play toe to toe with (and likely beat) any of the current top 10 teams—and it would have nothing to do with their conference and everything to do with how well they play on game day. But because some folks can’t get their heads out of the fantasyland of conference importance, such realities are lost on them. Oh, by the way, I’m a big Buckeyes fan, but I still think Utah is #1 this season, or at least should be able to play for #1 in the national championship game.

I think Feinstein’s article is persuasive - put a stake in the BCS. Protest vote!
“The reason to vote for Utah is simple: This is the one and only way you can stand up to the BCS bullies—the university presidents, commissioners, athletic directors and the TV networks who enable them—and, to renew a catch phrase, just say no. Say no to this horrible, hypocritical, feed-the-big-boys system. Say no to the idea that fair competition doesn’t matter. Say no to all the hype surrounding the power conferences and power teams. To co-opt yet another catch phrase, say yes to change. “

Great team, awesome season, wrong conference.
Sorry Utah, but you play in the MWC.
5 wins by 3 points or less. 5!!
Your wins over ranked opponents are Alabama (great), BYU (okay), and TCU (ehh).
Not all that impressive, in my opinion.

Honestly Brett I think Utah deserves to be #1. They have some big wins. I usually dont respect the non BCS schools but a 12-0 Utah sould have been given the chance to play for a BCS National Title. Utah got robbed.
