Wrapper redemption is golden for Topps

It must be redemption week among the sports card companies. Yesterday, you might recall that Panini was promoting NHL All-Star redemption backs. Well, today Topps is offering a redemption to coincide with its Gold Rush inserts.

Collectors who send in 50 hobby (not retail) wrappers (or 14 hobby jumbo wrappers) of 2012 Topps Series 1 Baseball will receive a five-card cello pack of Gold Rush cards.

There are 50 cards in this Gold Rush set, plus autographs. Here are some of the autos that could be pulled: Sandy Koufax, Willie Mays, Albert Pujols and Dennis Eckersley.

I’m telling you, getting a Koufax autograph would be a huge feather in my collecting cap. Or a Mays, for that matter. But Koufax has signed so infrequently that his deal with Topps makes getting a card with his autograph so much more than a pipe dream.

The wrapper redemption program will be available only for the month of February. Packaged wrappers sent to Topps must be postmarked no later than Feb. 29, 2012.
