Wolves staying busy on bye week

Newsome is one of the few Hillsborough County teams on a bye this week, but that didn’t mean the Wolves were taking it easy.

Coach Kenneth Hiscock said earlier this week his team would spend the off week focusing on fundamentals.

“Make sure we know how to tackle and run and all those things. Three phases of football,” Hiscock said.

The best news for Newsome is the team is finally healthy. A flu bug had ripped through the program, forcing as many as 28 players to the sidelines at one point.

Now, the Wolves are hoping to build on their first win of the season last week against Plant City, which was an important one because it was Newsome’s Class 5A-District 6 opener.

“Getting a win against Plant City was big for us to get this thing back turned around,” Hiscock said. “We’ll see if we can’t keep it on going that way.”

Fullback Conner Powers (401 rushing yards, four touchdowns) has gotten off to a good start this season, and Hiscock also has been pleased with running back Darnell Tucker, who was hampered by an ankle injury at the start of the season but rushed for 125 yards in the win over Plant City. The coach also singled out the play of linebacker/tight end Joe Worth and quarterback Matt Klenke.

Newsome (1-2) plays at Robinson next week.
