DALLAS Andrew Friedman left the Winter Meetings today without acquiring any players but confident he made positive strides toward trades and free agent signings.
“We feel like we’re in a better position to understand the lay of the land and to narrow down the scope for which domino we expect to go first,” Friedman said. “There’s a lot of productive internal and external conversations I think are going to play a very pivotal role in the next month as we go about constructing our 25-man roster.”
While depth among the starting pitching has attracted the most attention, Friedman said potential trades do not have to include one of the Rays prized arms.
“There are definitely scenarios that we don’t (trade a pitcher) and scenarios that we do, and there are certain scenarios we prefer much above others,” he said.
As expected, the Rays did not take any players in this morning’s Rule 5 draft. But they did lose two minor leaguers.
The Red Sox claimed catcher Gerardo Olivares in the Triple A portion of the draft, and the Orioles claimed third baseman Matthew Sweeney in the Double A portion. Sweeney came to the organization in the Scott Kazmir trade.
