It’s still unknown when University of South Florida junior Theo Wilson will return from a knee injury suffered Sept. 27 at N.C. State, but when he does he’ll be at a new position.
Wilson has been moved from cornerback to wide receiver.
“We want to see if we can get the ball in his hands,” USF coach Jim Leavitt said. “He’s not in the rotation [at DB]. We have four corners that are and next year we have two more. Theo’s an outstanding football player.”
In five games, Wilson had only two tackles. He returned four punts for an 18.5 average. Leavitt said there “might be a chance” for Wilson to return against Syracuse Oct. 18, but said it’s “a pretty remote possibility.”
Starting RG Zach Hermann, who’s missed USF’s last four games with a broken foot, will not return for Syracuse, Leavitt said. Starting RT Marc Dile, who injured his right ankle in Tuesday’s practice, didn’t practice Wednesday, but will be fine, Leavitt said.
The Bulls also received a scare during Wednesday’s practice when WR Jessie Hester Jr. was momentarily knocked unconscious while making a catch when his helmet hit the ground. He was taken off the field on a cart, but was fine afterward.
Leavitt said there is no timetable for when senior LB Brouce Mompremier, who injured his neck at Florida International Sept. 20, will begin practicing in pads. Mompremier rejoined the team for practice Tuesday, but is not wearing pads or participating in any contact drills.
“He’s just kind of running around,” Leavitt said. “”We haven’t even talked about [putting on] pads. We’re not going to that step right now.”

Rob, if you mean hire Tony Franklin now, there’s no chance. Leavitt hasn’t fired anyone at USF. I doubt he would start this year in mid-season. After the season, of course, anything is possible, but again, based on his track record, Leavitt doesn’t get rid of his assistants. They leave on their own for other jobs.

Jay, no word on if there will be any changes on kick returns. With two weeks between games, anything is possible. Keep in mind, no matter who is back there, if there aren’t any seams, they’re not going to get many big returns. I have not asked Gregory specifically about picking up the blitzes. But Pitt did something no one else had this year - it played press coverage with its defensive backs and the wide receivers could not get open. Couple that with a controlled blitz that kept Grothe in the pocket and that’s why Grothe was sacked four times, plus an intentional grounding.

Brett,
Just a couple questions. 1) Any chance of seeing a different kickoff return group. TJ hasn’t performed to well so far back there. Murphy and C. Mitchell would be a couple of burners! 2) Any response from G. Gregory over the lack of adjustments made against the blitz? Other teams will be bringing the house.
You do a great job!

Well I hope Q Washington replaces Tyler Roberts if he doesn’t get better. Isn’t Tyson Butler still injured? Am I missing something that we have far too many WRs compared to CBs? I guess we’re still trying to find guys that can run routes consistently.
Theo Wilson should get punt and kick returns, though.

Tyler “toast” Roberts is a big problem back there in the secondary. He couldn’t cover anyone 1 on 1 and didn’t find the ball (or even look back for it) on any of the throws that went his way vs. Pitt.
Of course we also show a lack of depth with Selvie and the other DL out we didn’t pressure the QB or stop the run.
Without the pressure teams will pick apart our secondary I’m afraid.
