TAMPA – Doug Williams’ decision to take a run at the Southern University head coach’s job was more than an attempt to simply remain employed.
Though it came at a time when he didn’t know if he had a future with the Bucs, Williams foray was aimed at getting back into a part of the football profession he truly loves and still has a thirst to return to.
It should come as no surprise then that Williams would likely jump at the chance to replace Jim Leavitt as the coach at USF.
Sources close to Williams say he considers the USF job a great opportunity, and while Williams has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the job he still hasn’t been contacted by USF or its search committee.
It could be that the committee just hasn’t gotten around to contacting Williams yet, or it could be that it’s looking for someone currently active in the coaching profession.
Williams, who is entering his second year as the Bucs director of pro personnel, has been out of coaching since he returned to the Bucs as a pro scout in 2004.
Prior to that, though, he had seemingly nothing but success as a coach, replacing Eddie Robinson at Grambling and returning that program to prominence by compiling a 52-18 record in six seasons as head coach.
During that run Williams led the Tigers to three consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference titles, was named SWAC coach of the year three times and was twice a finalist for the Division I-AA coach of the year award.
