TAMPA – Bucs pro personnel director Doug Williams has accepted the team’s offer to stay on for another year in the same capacity.
Williams told The Tampa Tribune on Thursday that he accepted the Bucs offer of a one-year contract extension on Wednesday and withdrew his name from consideration for the head coach’s job at Southern University.
Williams, who quarterbacked the Bucs from 1978-82, has been a member of its front office staff since 2004, when he returned to the Bucs as a pro personnel executive.
Williams was promoted to coordinator of pro scouting when Mark Dominik was named general manager last January, but his contract with the team was set to expire in February.
Unsure of the Bucs plans for him, Williams interviewed for the Southern University head coach’s job last weekend while in New Orleans. The Bucs quickly countered with their offer of a one-year extension.
The offer to Williams comes at a time when the Bucs are said to be talking to Bill Cowher about possibly taking over as their head coach, but the re-signing of Williams may be seen as a sign that Dominik and head coach Raheem Morris will be retained.
With Williams withdrawing his name from consideration for the Southern job, the university has reportedly offered the head coach’s positoin to Redskins running backs coach Stump Mitchell.
