TAMPA – Don’t be surprised if the next jolt of news to come out of One Buc Place is the signing of WR Antonio Bryant to a new contract.
Re-signing Bryant was probably the No. 1 goal of the early portion of the offseason for the Bucs because they don’t want to face the danger of losing Bryant to another team.
The only way to do that is to sign him to a new contract before the start of free agency on Feb. 27. There’s another deadline in play here, though, and that’s the Feb. 19 deadline for tagging franchise players.
The Bucs don’t want to tag Bryant because the situation could get ugly if they do. But they may not have a choice in the matter if they feel they won’t get a deal done before the start of the free-agency signing period.
We know that the two sides have been talking for weeks now and Bryant seemed confident of where the talks were headed the last time we talked to him. That was a couple weeks ago, though, and we’ve heard nothing since.
This is not necessarily a no-news-is-good news scenario, but you get the feeling both sides want to get this deal done. When that’s the case, a deal usually does get done.

I think he should get the big bucks. He was great last year. He also stayed out of trouble. If the Buc’s feel that will contune, then they have no excuses. I think they should also keep Joey & Ike for 3rd down’s and find someone tall & fast and dump t crybaby

I definately agree with bill on this, Bryant was outstanding this year and had one of the best seasons a wideout has ever had in Tampa. I think many other teams are licking their chops right now hoping that he hits the market, and if a deal doesnt get done soon he may get an offer he cant turn down somewhere else. This is my plea to Mark Dominik…..PLEASE bring back Bryant!

I believe that the only way Bryant will be compensated properly is either for the Bucs to franchise him or for him to get into free agency! The Bucs are trying to sign him before free agency as to pay him less than other teams would! I hope that the Bucs sign him and don’t let the money stop the process, after all, he is our ONLY good receiver!

It will be interesting to see what he plays like after he gets the big bucks from the Bucs or someone else. Don’t forget about his past problems. He had a great year in 2008 and let’s hope he has a great career in Tampa Bay.

Pay the guy, he was outstanding last year. Big receiver than can catch the ball in the middle of the field and can also catch the ball deep. Remember the one hand catch in the end zone! He earned the money and we have it. Do not be cheap with one of the best young receivers in the NFL. He is also one of the best receivers if not the best we have ever have.

Bryant and Clayton give Bucs a good 1-2 punch…in a new downthefield offensive scheme. No one has yet defined what scheme the Bucs will have. But, Bryant proved himself and Clayton showed enough to have hope that in the right scheme he can return to brilliance. After all, he proved his talent his rookie year. The downfall is a result of poor coaching and the wrong system. Square peg in round hole. With Galloway and Hilliard to round out, we can use draft picks where needed more.

Kinzer, I doubt Bryant will give the bucs a discount. I’m sure his agent has a number in mind and if the Bucs don’t meet it, Bryant’s going to be a free agent. It’s in the teams best interest to compensate him, not to go on the cheap. Franchising him is not the right answer either because it’s only a 1 year deal and it pays the average of the top 5 (or 10) salaries at that position, so either way, we’re going to have to pay to retain him and if he has a bigger year next year (which I’m sure is the hope) then we’ll have to pony up even more money to keep him. We either pay up or lose him, simple as that.

I’d just like to point out that Bryant already signed one big FA contract and then was out of the league 2 years later… And how much of him being open downfield was because we were stuck with Garcia at QB. Other teams knew he wouldn’t look deep so Bryant may actually have been that wide open because Jeff never saw a check down he didn’t like… Or a D-lineman he couldn’t take his eyes off of (maybe that’s why TO said that).
I say resign him (preferably to a insentive laiden deal), but this guy has a HUGE bust factor.

Cval, square hands round ball, that’s what his catching abilities have been since his rookie year. He is injury prone too. He hasn’t played a full year since his rookie year. Also he was the only reciever we had his rookie year. Jurvious out, Galloway out, that left Scheorder, Lee, and Tim Brown. So not sure if his numbers would have been the same, had Jurvious and Galloway not been on IR. Please no Clayton he has had his chances. He drops too many 3rd for 1st down passes.(heck he had 3 key drops in the last game vs oakland)
Suggest removalPor (Mel Kiper, Jr) on February 12, 2009 (Suggest removal)
I’ll assume a typo for Bill Schroeder, but who is this “Jurvious” guy on IR?
A real fan would not get the name of such a great Buc player wrong two times in the same sentence.
Joe Jurevicius and the rest of the Tampa Bay fans that post here deserve much, much better.
Oar, you are a disgrace.

Mel Kiper Jr.(if that is really you?), no, my spelling is a disgrace, same as your draft analysis is a disgrace. At least you could have played the damn game.
Suggest removalTo Jurevicius and to any Bucs fans that are seriously disgraced/disrespected by my bad spelling, I most humbly apologize.

How much do you guys think Antonio Bryant is worth? I want years, salary and then guaranteed money. Who can hit this one on the head? I’m thinking 4years, 20 million and 8 mill guaranteed.
Suggest removalPor (Roland) on February 13, 2009 (Suggest removal)
dolpinsfanintampa, that sounds about right… Although I wouldn’t guarantee that much if I didn’t have to. I haven’t don’t any comps on middle of the road #1 WRs for teams around the league, but I’d think that’s about what he’ll get as a FA. Unless to many of the teams that need WRs are scared off by his history. Then he’ll get a fair bit less.
Suggest removalPor (dolpinsfanintampa) on February 13, 2009 (Suggest removal)
Here go some #1 and #2 WR’S salaries and this is why I think AB is worth 20 million with his on field character issues. Eagles Kevin Curtis (6years $32 million, $9.5 guaranteed), Drew Bennett (6years $30 million, $10 million guaranteed), Donte’ Stallsworth (7years $35 million, $10 million guaranteed), jerry porter (6years $30million, $7.5 million guaranteed). Reggie Brown (5years $21million, $10million guaranteed). Javon Walker (6year, $55 million $16 million guaranteed). Justin Gage (4years $14 million $6.5 guaranteed). Roland Curry (5-year $20 million, $8.5 million guaranteed).

You may have not intended to do so, but I think you have managed to express the state of mind that a lot of people are in. The sense of wanting to help, but without knowing how or where, is something a lot of us are going through.
