Who will Tuskers sign next? Reed and Buie are latest Bulls to sign

Florida Tuskers head coach Jay Gruden has deep roots in Tampa, so he knows quite a bit about USF’s football program.

It shows.

After signing former USF quarterback Matt Grothe last week, Gruden added two other former Bulls on Tuesday, signing defensive back J.R. Reed and defensive lineman Jarriett Buie.

“J.R. Reed was a heck of a football player in college and had a successful stint in the NFL,’’ Gruden said in a prepared statement. “His reputation is that of an extremely intelligent player who has a knack for always being in the right place at the right time – almost like having another coach on the field.’’

Meanwhile, a 6-foot-4, 250-pound defensive lineman, Buie spent last season on the Bucs’ practice squad after recording 74 tackles and seven sacks at USF. His final season for the Bulls was in 2008.

Both players are from Tampa-area high schools – Reed played at Hillsborough and Buie at Armwood.

Since the Tuskers are fond of former USF players, who do you think will be the next former Bull to sign with Orlando’s UFL franchise?

Ben Busbee? Perhaps Chris Robinson if that CFL gig doesn’t work out?

Scott, what do you think Grothe’s success will be in this league? Will he be Orlando’s starting QB?

Dan, just from Jay Gruden’s reaction to signing him, he seems really convinced that Grothe can play QB at the pro level.

I won’t be too surprised if Grothe is a successful QB in the UFL or later the CFL. Who knows, maybe he can become a Doug Flutie type story. Have great success in other pro leagues and finally convince an NFL team to take a flyer on you. That’s what happened with Flutie and he proved a lot of NFL scouts wrong for the final years of his pro career.

Well, I hope so; and in later articles about him, Grothe often mentioned his relationship with Flutie. I think he knew the chances of becoming a starting QB in the NFL, and was trying to do the best he could. Once upon a time, the Buccaneers started Bruce Gradkowski because we lost so many QB’s to injury that year. So you never know.
