It’s the last day of the decade, one that left us so confused that we’re still not sure what to call it.
What would a USF sports blog be without some sort of poll related to the Bulls’ first full decade as a football-playing school.
So, I’m keeping it simple: Who is USF’s Player of the Decade?
My only rule in this little poll is that the player had to be a starter for at least two years and play the majority of his career in, you guessed it, the 2000s.
I’ve narrowed the final list down to eight players, but if you feel like I’ve missed the top player of the decade, by all means cast your vote for that player. A couple of linebackers quickly come to mind, but I wanted to keep the list at eight in honor of Matt Grothe’s uniform number—geez, hope I didn’t give away my pick there.
Here goes:
RB Andre Hall
QB Matt Grothe
QB Marquel Blackwell
LB Ben Moffitt
DE George Selvie
DB Mike Jenkins
DB J.R. Reed
LB Kawika Mitchell

For all the great work Matt did, still have to go with Marguel
My vote: QB Marquel Blackwell

Scott….all of those guys have had great careers at USF and 5 of the 8 are not surprisingly from the defensive side of the ball.
But my pick has to be Grothe:
4 straight bowls
2 in the BCS
first time AP rankings
Wins at AU, WVU, against KU
BE all-time yds leader
(I am sure I forgetting something)
Character, toughness, leadership
Hands down….no other player compares!
To Scott and to all other Bulls alumni, students, players and coaches….Happy New Year!

Grothe number 1 followed by Andre Hall and Marquel Blackwell tied for second.

Marquel Blackwell. More than any other single player he helped the Bulls transition from a competitive 1-AA to competitive 1-A program.
Hopefully the next player of the decade will be the one who takes us from a competetive 1-A program to an elite 1-A program. Happy New Year!

I really, really like Grothe, but Marquel Blackwell was the first guy on our little team to get serious national attention for the program. When Grothe started playing, people said he was like Blackwell. (Marquel played in CUSA and Grothe in the Big East, so it is not really fair to compare.) You always thought you had a chance to come back and win with Marquel, no matter what the situation. That was true for the Grothe teams for a few years, but not as true as with Blackwell. Either would be a correct choice, and both should be honored to be a part of the conversation. Probably what puts Blackwell over the top is that he got a tryout with the Jets, who ended up using Chad Pennington over him, supposedly after much debate.

I messed that up a little. I think he was competing to be Pennington’s backup.

From your list:
8. Ben Moffitt
7. Kawika Mitchell
6. J.R. Reed
5. Mike Jenkins
4. George Selvie
3. Matt Grothe
2. Andre Hall
1. Marquell Blackwell
The team had the biggest growth spurt under the direction of Blackwell.

Thanks for the feedback folks. I thought Grothe might win in a landslide, but it’s obvious Blackwell’s contribution to the program’s early years isn’t overlooked.
You can’t go wrong either way really. Both played the most important position on the team, and both produced and led the program to new heights during their respective careers.
Happy New Year to everyone!

My vote is for Matt G. He pulled off some great upsets, got the team talked about at the national level. George would be my 2nd (2 time all-american), But the best is yet to come.
